I am trying to create a report for export which shows, for example:
BORN [date] DIED [date] on one line but when I try to add BORN into the line of print as: ' [BORN] INDI.BIRT[1].DATE:COMPACT' the result is 'the expression entered is not recognised as a valid tag 'address'' I hope you can understand what I am trying to create, and suggest a way round.

Jeremy,
The expression I use to get what you want is :-
born: %INDI.BIRT.DATE:COMPACT% died: %INDI.DEAT.DATE:COMPACT%
You appear to have the % marks missing in the data reference.
Hope this helps.

Peter - thanks for that, but I am not sure that is the answer. Could you possibly type out exactly what is in the Column line and the Row line, just using born as an example. Very many thanks, Jeremy

Jeremy,
Please accept my apologies for giving you dud information. For some reason I got into my head that you were asking about DIAGRAMS when you clearly said QUERIES. The info I gave you was for diagrams. I have tried to produce what you want in a query and have so far not suceeded.
Sorry for the confusion.

Not to worry - maybe someone else has an idea? Would a report be more suitable??

Jeremy you can do this in a query if you want but the Born part must be a column heading, only diagrams can mix references and text to my knowledge.
What are you trying to achieve, why are you exporting the data I can not think of a reason to use mixed data if you want to load the data in to a database or spread sheet.

Jane - thanks for your interest. I have achieved the query with the column headings but I want to export the basic data from FH to a database programme I use called InfoSelect. I can then carry it with me on a PDA to Record centres etc and do a basic search to see if the data I find matches an entry I have in FH. I can search on any part of any entry eg date. So I want one LINE entries in the format:
Name BORN [date] CHR [date] DEATH [date] BUR [date]. I need the descriptor to be sure which event the date refers to. I have a great deal of data already in in the database, and this FH info would add immensely to the usefulness of the PDA.
I hope you can understand this, and that it is possible as I dont want to have to transfer the info on 4000 people manually!
Would a report do the job?
Thanks, Jeremy

Depending on your PDA type why not use one of the PDA products designed for the job I use the Northern Hills one and it works very well with my data, there is also My Roots for Palm based machines.
If you have pocket PC why not simply export the query to Pocket excel and use the search in that?

I could do that - I have just tried, but it means searching on more than one database for any particular date. Oh well, so be it.
Thanks for your help, Jeremy

Why not merge all your databases together and then load them as one just on the PDA?
I have all my research in one database so do not have that problem.

In Info Select I gather all my random pieces of information in any format, newspaper extracts, biographies, anything that carries the name HILLS just in case there is a connection, and I can do a search on ANY combination of words, letters, dates etc - it is very powerful and useful - I have found links that I would not otherwise have found. That is why I am trying to combine all the basic data within that programme, hence my original request. Excel can just do dates, but not the powerful searches I need. Thanks for your interest, Jeremy

You could use a report as you suggested earlier and save the information as a text file and load that in.

I am in the process of testing that approach, and it does seem promising. I will let you know if it works exactly as I want it to!
