Until the ability to convert the FH data ready for upload to a web site is available (I note it is in the wish list) does anybody have a recomendation on a software that will ease the task - Cyndis List has quite a few GED to HTML programs listed - has anybody tried them or have a recommendation. I would like to get my entire tree online with all the data indexed. Cheers from 'Down-Under', and Happy Xmas everybody.

Sorry Jane - I've just noticed an earlier post regarding the same subject - I'll check 'phpgedview' as you suggest

I've used Lagacy, RootsMagic and GED4WEB for various versions & purposes. Certainly,GED4WEB works well and is cheap to buy. There are others around but it depends what you want to display.
Unfortunately, my ISP (Demon) can't handhe PHP and I haven't tried the other free sites that I use.
Hope this might be of some help.

Jane - thanks for the tip about 'phpgedview'. I have just put my site up - it's BRILLIANT software. If anybody is considering putting their tree online don't waste your time with anything else, this knocks the socks off all other programs. It was a bit of learning curve getting it up (particularly permissions) but well worth the effort of actually reading the instructions for once !
When I have checked that all living persons have been made private I'll post the site address here. Thanks again Jane.[smile]

Since the initial posting and Janes suggestion to use phpGedView (PGV) I have been on a steep learning curve and I thought I would pass on a few tips if anybody is thinking of moving online with PGV.
But first, the good news. Within a couple of weeks of putting the site up I was contacted by a group researching one of my names, Godfrey, and since then it has been a roller coaster ! Not only has the group of five (scattered around the World) done an incredible amount of quality work which I could not have completed in a lifetime, but I have discovered distant cousins living locally as a result. It is amazing. So I encourage everyone to get on-line.
Now PGV. 1) First, get Janes excellent gedcom converter off this site - without it you cannot upload images etc effectively from FH.
2) Link any doc images (census scans, certificates) to the actual attribute in FH - so 'add multimedia object' at the census/birth etc attribute in the main screen. If you leave the image linked to the person as normal in FH you end up with certificates showing in PGV where there should be photos.
You may have to delete existing links in FH 3) When adding photos use the normal 'insert picture/add link' routine in FH and the photos appear in the 'media' tab in PGV and thumbnails are correct. 4) 'Notes' in the FH individuals data screen (Jane - we should give the various screens/pages in FH better names so that we can describe these things more easily)will appear correctly in the Notes Tab in PGV - TIP: Do a narrative report in FH of the individual - save as text file - edit, make readable, add anecdotes, refs etc, then save to the Notes tab in FH - this provides a great, readable verbage in PGV.
Unfortunately the help text with PGV is limited and generic - and the help forum on PGV is a bit technical and not specific to FH. If there is a demand I would suggest we set up a PGV specific forum where we could exchange these hard won experiences.
Jane is the PGV expert - I volunteer her as the new forum admin !!

Greetings all,
Members might be interested to know that I have written a piece of software which converts GEDCOM to html suitable for posting on the web. I use Family Historian for my family tree research, and I wrote the program to work with Family Historian files. I would be interested to receive feedback from anyone who tries it. You can find it at http://www.logicmill.com/

That looks quite good Alex.
I have added your program to the download section so hopefully you will get more feedback.

I like to think I know something about using computer software but I have found installing phpGedView beyond my ability. Has anyone got some comprehensible step by step guide on how to link the launcher to the other files of the program? Until I can do this I don't even know how difficult it will be to upload my FH file!

remember you must first uncompress phpgedview and upload all the files to your web space, they will not run on your PC.
There are instructions at
http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/installation.php
What section are you actually having problems with?

I am surprised no-one has mentioned GedHTree, which is reasonably easy to set up and produces quite a nice result. I have tried GedMill (The Logic Mill) - see my comment in the last subject here. It does depend on what you want as an output - GedMill is a simple but clear result.

I have uploaded the files to my isp but I don't quite understand how I move on from there. How do I change the permissions to continue the web configuration?

In your FTP client there will be options to change permissions, normally you can right click on the files.

Thank you for your help. I am using ws-ftp and seem to be able to change permissions now. Unfortunately it seems to have no effect on my web site. I am using the free space allocated by 'Blueyonder' and whenever I try to continue the configuration, as per the phpGedView instructions all I get is '403 forbidden'. I suspect that the fault lies with my lack of understanding of the 'Blueyonder' configuration - I am not even sure whether they support PHP. A little more reading for me I think!!

Did you put the files into the htdocs folder?
I did a quick google search for 403 and blueyonder and found -

Thanks Jane, yes I did put the files in htdocs but it seems to have made no difference as I still seem to get no further.
It seems from the reference that you gave me that I am not the only one that has had a problem with 'blueyonder' web space. On the plus side there are a number of possible solutions so I will try a few of them.
Watch this space ......!

John if you are still stuck, if you wander over to rootschat and ask nicely they will give you 50Mb of space and install phpgedview for you if you put it on their space. There are a few adds, but its free.

I am still stuck with the 'blueyonder' web space. I have found out that 'blueyonder' do not support PHP on their free web space. On their 'pay' version they support PHP version 4.2 which I am not sure will work with phpgedview. I wonder if anyone else has managed to get it working?
I will take up your suggestion and try rootschat.

Hi Jane
Just to report that I have established a site at rootschat. No data on the site yet but at least I have got phpgedview configuration up and running. For a person, like me, with a fairly basic knowledge of computers, there is quite a lot of reading to do (for example - what are permissions and how do I change them).
There is quite a lot of help in the forums at rootschat.

I also use Blueyonder and i believe that it does not support PHP. This is because when i went to the PHPGedView site the said to create a file and upload to the web to test if PHP is supported and it comes back to say is Not Supported. So either i did something wrong which i don't believe as i did as am a Computer Engineer but don't do much with web design. or Blueyonder doesn't support PHP but cannot see anything on their support sites to say wether it does or not.

I'd been using ws-ftp for a number of years - and still do - but there's a free program called Core FTP Lite which I find so much faster and user-friendly that I don't use ws-ftp at all now. Not really relevant to your comments but might be of some use. One thing about Core is that as long as you provide an e-mail address when registering, the program can be used for commercial, and there business use - not just home. Worth remembering.

Thanks Nigel. I have downloaded the program and it looks quite easy to use. I seem to have solved most of my problems with getting my stuff on a web site. PHP works well on rootschat. All I have to do now is tidy up my
family historian file and I'm ready to go[grin]

Just wanted to say that I just tried the Gedmill software and it was very very easy to use and has created a simple, clear and attractive set of webpages and a good index. With my minimal html knowledge, I've also been able to customize my home page and add a couple of pictures to the individual's pages. I'm waiting for some help to upload this to my website (this is where my expertise runs out) but when I do, I'll put a link on the Logicmill page. I certainly recommend it for anyone who's not too technically minded who's just keen to share basic information with the rest of the world.
Thanks, Alex.
