FH2.3 - editing narrative sentences

Post by TimM » 18 Nov 2004 17:54

Hi,
There's been talk of being able to edit the text used in the new narrative sentences.
I would like to change the wording for specific Events/Attributes.
I've looked in the preferences and found the templates, but they are not specific to each event/attribute.
I thought I might be on to a winner when I found I could highlight the sentence text at the bottom of the properties panel, bur alas, it wouldn't edit!!
Am I trying to do something that can't be done?

Sorry in 2.3 you can not edit the templates for standard events/attributes in FH, on the one for the custom events and attributes.

FH2.3 - editing narrative sentences

Just came across this thread - is there a way to change the narrative sentences in v. 3?

The manual says about {date}:
'Date Code: {date}Will insert the date in a text format, with an appropriate prefix. For example, if the date is an exact day, the prefix will be ‘on’ (e.g. on “30th January, 2001”). If the date is a month or year, the prefix will be ‘in’ (e.g. in 1998). If the date is a range or a period, again appropriate prefixes will be used.'

Well. 'On' may be an appropriate prefix in English, but I would like to devise a specific GERMAN narrative report. I can write a lot of stuff around {date}, but I still have that 'on' in the sentence, which doesn't look that good in a German sentence.

TIA!

Sabine

I don't think so, I will flag to Calico.

I imagine there is a similar problem with the His/Her He/She sections as well?

Hi Jane,

indeed yes. It wasn't relevant for what I had planned, but yes.

If one doesn't want to make the whole system fit for multiple languages, it might help if Calico Pie could devise a short form for the {date} sentence part as they did for the {place} part:
Place (with no prefix) Code: {_place}

Sabine

We will think about what you said.  We certainly will want to make FH suitable for multiple languages.  The date code is actually more complex than it might appear because there are so many possible kinds of date types.  For example, the date might be accurate to the day, to the month or to the year.  It could also be a range (between X and Y, before X, after Y, etc) or a period (from ..., to... or from ... to ...).  There are other possibilities.  And most of them (in English, and perhaps in other languages too) require different prefixes etc.  But perhaps a good start would be a 'bare' date option.  Presumably it would have to be numeric only.  I imagine you wouldn't want 'January 1989' (for example) appearing in a German sentence?
