Is there a way to tag or mark an ancestor as a lead (possible but unverified) so it shows up in the charts a certain way?

Yes, add a new Record Flag to the Individual Record and add a Diagram Options > Boxes tab > Condition > Record Flag to alter Charts.

See Using Flags and Icons for more details, but bear in mind that any Box Features such as fill/line/shape/shadow/text colour can be conditional on the Record Flag not just Icons.
