Family Tree CD/DVD creator

Post by stuartcw » 06 Jul 2012 21:23

I have upgraded to v5 and have a ‘problem’ with the Family Tree CD/DVD creator. With v4 I was able to select and download a gedcom file, add the item to the Table of Contents and, once the CD had been created, open the gedcom file directly from the Contents page. The same process seems to apply with v5 but (when the CD has been created and using the preview) when I click on the item on the contents page all I see is pages of data from the tree file (i.e. not in the FH software format.) If I look in the FH CD/DVD folder I can find and open the gedcom file in/from the ‘Data’ folder but should it not still open from the contents page? I guess this is something to do with the fact that with v5 the files open through a browser or was that the same with v4? Am I missing something or is this a ‘glitch’?

You are doing nothing wrong, and FH has not changed.

The behaviour is governed by your Internet browser settings.
Depending on whether your default browser is Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome the settings are different.
The way it works is that for each file type (in this case .ged) the browser needs to know which Program Application to use to open that type of file.

On my PC for instance, Internet Explorer after a few prompts opens the .ged file with FH, but Firefox just opens it as a plain text file.
Firefox allows you to specify the Application for a file type in Tools > Options > Applications but only if it lists the file type.
The Help doe not make it clear how to add a missing file type.

For me when using Firefox it opens the plain text .ged file looking something like this

Code: Select all

0 HEAD
1 SOUR FAMILY_HISTORIAN
2 VERS 5.0
2 NAME Family Historian
2 CORP Calico Pie Limited
1 FILE C:UsersMikeDocumentsFamily Historian ProjectsTest Web PagesTest Web Pages.fh_dataTest Web Pages.ged
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
1 CHAR ANSI
1 _UID {13F463F0-5340-4056-AB3F-49972FE733CB}
1 _LIST Non-Duplicates
2 _IDS I66,I64
1 _LIST Key Individuals
1 _LIST Work in Progress
1 _LIST Bookmarks
1 _ROOT @I1@
0 @I1@ INDI
I can right-click in the window and choose View Page in Ext.App. then in the View Downloads window select Open and FH opens the GEDCOM.

I have been using Chrome recently and that seems to be the problem (thanks). After reading your explanation I reverted to IE as the default browser and was able to open the file without difficulty. So far so good. Now I need to work out how to get Chrome to open the same file but I have not got there yet...right clicking does not offer me the convenient little 'Open with' tool that we have on IE for example. I will keep looking but if you have the answer ....

Found this for Google Chrome
If you want certain types of files to always open after they're done downloading, click the arrow next to the file button in the downloads bar and select Always open files of this type. To prevent potentially malicious files from automatically downloading to your computer, this option isn't available for executable filetypes, such as those with .exe, .dll, or .bat extensions.
Here is the link http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/an ... swer=95759 then click Automatically open certain types of files near the bottom.

I appreciate your attempt to help but that (the auto opening option) does not seem to solve the problem in that it still doesn't offer the choice of which programme to use. I posted on the Chrome support website and was advised to load the files onto Google Drive. This works if I load the original .ged file (i.e. the file opens normally) but not if I load the CD/DVD folder where the tree again opens from the Contents page as a text file. I am coming to the conclusion that I have the choice of simply using IE for this operation or opening the file from the data folder. If anyone has cracked it with Chrome I should be delighted to hear!
