problem with uploaded census templates

Post by BillH » 21 Feb 2012 23:49

I tried to upload some census templates into the Ancestral Sources portion of the Downloads page.  However, none of the download links seem to work.

How can I get these fixed?

Thanks,

Bill

What filenames did you use Bill?
It is best to use names with only alphanumeric characters - no symbols such as '&' or ''' - otherwise the upload sometimes cannot handle the filename.
Wait a while, and possibly Jane will be able to fix them.

Mike,

I forgot and used a quote mark and spaces in the name.  Hopefully Jane can get it sorted out.

Thanks,

Bill

Jane,

I see the files I tried to upload are gone from the Ancestral Sources section of the downloads.

Should I just try again?  I can make sure I don't use any special characters or spaces in the file names.

For census templates is there any size limitation?  Any other things to worry about?

Thanks,

Bill

Jane,

Just wondered if you had a chance to look at this yet.  Should I just be trying again with file names that have no special characters or is there more I need to do?

Thanks,

Bill

When I looked at them you had not actually clicked on the insert / OK option I don't think so they had no link to the file.

Can you try one again please and let me know if you get an error on the upload.

Jane,

Actually, I did click on the button and I got the pop up window that said it was successful. However, when I then tried to download them, the link didn't work.

I'll try one again.

Thanks,

Bill

Hmmm... still not working.

I go to the AS section of the Download and click on 'Add Downloads' and I get this:

Image

I put in the name and then click on the 'Upload File' link to get the file name.

I browse to the file I want and get this:

Image

I select the file I want 'Bills USA Census Templates.xml' and I get this a weird window popping up

When you get the Pop up successful, you must click the OK link to put the file link back to the main page.

Oops... accidentily clicked on post message.

The window I got this time looked like this:

Image

That isn't the same thing I got before.

I thought I did click on OK last time. This time I didn't get an OK.

I tried renaming the file to 'Bill_USA.xml' to make it 8 characters and that ended up with the same result.

What am I doing wrong?

I tried uploading the file using IE 9 instead of Firefox and got the same result.  I can't attach the file to the upload process, I get the weird window with the ! mark.

Is anyone else able to browse and attach a file to the upload process in the Ancestral Sources section of the downloads?

You don't have to actually add the upload to the site, just browse to it and see if it will attach to the upload process.

Is there some problem with the site at the moment?

Thanks,

Bill

I get the following window after clicking on Upload File:
Image
(the same as when uploading the image, but with different types listed).  I then click on the Choose File button, after which the 'No file chosen' is replaced by my selected filename.  Then I would click on the Submit button.  But if I click on the Submit button when 'No file chosen' is displayed, I get the window you've shown with the exclamation mark '!'.

Jane,

OK... I can do that. How do I attach files to an email to you. I don't see a way to do this using the 'send email' icon or using the 'contact admin' link.

I guess I had not run across it before. I have sent you an email with the files attached.

Thanks!

The exact layout of the Upload form is probably browser dependant.
I gate the same Upload form with Browse button as you Bill.

Mike,

Are you able to attach a file to the upload process without problems?

I am able to upload a variety of files OK.

BUT some (not all) .xml files result in the same ! - screen as you get.

I cannot yet identify what it is that causes that unusual effect.

[EDIT]
I am fairly sure it is the size of the file.
Despite the (1500 characters max.) note, much larger files work OK up to about 25,000 characters (~150 KB).
But even larger files of about 30,000 characters (~200 KB) or more, give the ! - screen but no explanation that the size limit has been exceeded.

It is quite common for some AS .xml files to be this large.

I note that the similar image upload for Forum attachments says Upload Image File maximum size 150Kb (.jpg , .gif , .png), which defines a 150 KB limit.
This is about the limit I found for Downloads - Upload File option.

The files I was trying to upload were 83 KB, 1 KB, 22 KB, 31 KB, 9 KB, and 171 KB.

We may never know.

Thanks,

Bill

From my testing I would expect the 171KB file to fail, and perhaps the 83KB, but the other small ones should have been OK.

Perhaps Jane could look into this phenomenon.

It occurs to me (rather belatedly) that these files would all be a lot smaller if zipped.

That is true, but adds an extra step to unpack the downloaded zip file, that some users appear to find difficult to cope with.
