Wiki Signing Up Form

Post by tatewise » 18 Aug 2013 22:08

Obviously I already have a Wiki account.
Interestingly though, the form lists:

Code: Select all

   Your FHUG User ID *
Your E-Mail Address * tatewise
   Required password * ***********
Why is my User ID listed as my E-Mail Address ?

ID:7044

No idea I have not told it to and it does not do so for me.

Do you have any automatic form filling software which might be doing it?

Yes, I use Firefox with its Security option to Remember passwords for sites .

So the Form Name of the E-Mail Address field presumably is fooling Firefox into thinking it is a Username field.

Whereas, the Form Name of the FHUG User ID field is not being recognised as a conventional Username field.

If I clear the Form, then left-click on the E-Mail Address field, then it offers tatewise , and if I accept that or type in tatewise , then the password field is auto-filled.

That does not happen if I do the same with the FHUG User ID field.

So I wonder if the Form Names are slightly unconventional and fooling Firefox (or any other auto-form fillers), and perhaps need revising?

P.S.
When I use the Wiki Login it auto-fills my Username and Password with the same values as above.

The fieldnames bureaucracy[x] where x is the row on the page.

So I assume Firefox is using the label fields.

What do you suggest I use as descriptions.

You can edit the form if you want to play to avoid firefox getting it wrong.

The most important item appears to be the Password field.
Firefox seems to assume the preceding textbox or email item to be a Username field.

So, I have swapped the E-mail and User ID fields to fix the problem.

I have also altered the Comments field to multi-line.

The whole form is bold.

As an alternative to using the 'agree' field, have you considered using the CAPTCHA plugin to prevent spamming.

Feel free to undo any of those changes if you wish.

I did look at the CAPTCHA and if I get a lot of rubbish I will put in on. Personally I hate filling them so, I would be more likely to put on a question which anyone who knows FH, can answer. The new forum software asks for the four letter word for the title of the person who is your Father's Brother's Sister and that seems to have stopped the 'random' sign ups completely. So I will use that sort of question if I need to.
