Subscribe/Unsubscribe topic

The tick against the spanner menu Subscribe topic seems counter-intuitive.
Some users interpret that as implying you are subscribed and will get Email notifications.
Whereas that is the default setting and you are not subscribed, as has always been the case.

When you click to subscribe, the tick clears, implying you are not subscribed, but in fact you are subscribed :?

The similar Bookmark topic and Remove from bookmarks options behave much more rationally.
Its associated icon does not change and the legend is quite clear.

If the Subscribe/Unsubscribe topic had a similar unchanging icon, then the legend is clear enough, less confusing, and the action confirmed by the popup message.

I suspect the above behaviour has possibly been introduced since changing server or theme?

I can swap the graphics, but they are currently showing what clicking the link will do not the current state.

What do others think.

I think the fact that the wording associated with the icon is correct (and changes when you subscribe or unsubscribe) plus the fact that you get a big message telling you what you've just done, should be enough to avoid any confusion.

The snag is new users like KennethEvans have never clicked the item, and so have never seen the message.
They are fooled into thinking the tick means they are subscribed as he reported in his BTW at the bottom of https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic ... 242#p96236.

Can the icon be changed so that it stays the same without a tick, just like the Bookmark topic?

If not, then swapping round and hiding the tick in default mode would probably avoid the current false impression.

I have to agree with Mike on having the icon show the state of the option, rather than what it will do if clicked on.

Once a user has selected it, you then see the resulting popup, but in today's fast paced world it is all too easy to assume rather than check ;)

As an aside - when selecting the subscribe icon I normally get the 'you have subscribed/unsubscribed' message. However, once in a blue moon, I instead get an alternate 'Are you sure you wish to subscribe...' which needs an additional click.

Certainly not a cause for complaint, but an interesting quirk!

I have changed it on the standard theme to never show the tick
