Topic Numbers

I have been meaning to ask this question for some time.
I read these forums every day, picking up amazing hints and tips from all the contributors but am yet to understand the numbering system used for Topics.
Each Topic (I believe) receives a number which can be used when referring back to it, with a link.
How does one find these numbers? Is there an index of Topics with the associated number?
As mentioned, I find really good stuff and, unless I print it out, can never find it again if I don't remember the detail to enter into the search box.
I hope this is not a stupid question, but cannot find anything to explain how this works.
Regards
Roger

You can see the topic number at the end of the url in the address box in your browser.
For instance this topic is number 14788. To access this topic at any time you just use the full url which in this case is
Code: Select all
http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=14788
(I have put it into code tags so it is not truncated and shown as a link).

You can also bookmark topics and access them from your Bookmark list in your User Control panel.

Valkrider and Jane. Thank you both.
After 9 years it is apparent that I should have asked this question a LONG time ago.
Not being a computer code person, I would never have found that link, although it was staring me in the face. I would think that you still need to know the topic name before you can access the link?
The Bookmarking I would never have found. I am now busily digging out those I have wanted to follow on, and am Bookmarking like mad.
Thanks again.

Roger,
I didn't realise that either. It wasn't helped by my browsers, Firefox on my PC has the website address bar too short, so the topic number is not visible unless one scrolled, and address bar in Safari on my iPad hides ALL details except main website address, so all I normally see is fhug.co.uk, so again, topic number is not visible until one taps and holds the address bar!

Another useful tool appears down the side of the page, it allows you to "clip" a page or send a link. The Green Elephant allows you to clip the entire page to Evernote, a tool I would not want to do with out these days, as I tend to store my "life" in it.
Evernote allows you to store complete pages with a link back to the original web site, so it's great for grabbing Hints and Tips or transcriptions for future use.

sorry if this is late, just catching up. I don't think it has been mentioned:
before the large font topic title is an *, click this to get a popup with the topic number enclosed in a format for use in a topic posting. Similar can also be done from much of the Knowledge base, except it is on the right. These are particularly useful when adding to the forum, also the url in the address bar is different, if you have landed there via a search.

Good point! I never spotted /noticed the
* before you mentioned it
NB Jim is referring to the topic
title at the top of the page, not the title shown at the top of each post

It is mentioned in the
Forum Usage Guide (4252) that I suspect nobody bothers to read.

"before the large font topic title is an *, click this to get a popup with the topic number enclosed in a format for use in a topic posting."
I can't find the * anymore! Am I looking in the wrong place?

OK if I set my My board style to anything but Prosilver the * is there.
I'm not sure if there are any advantages to the 4 My board styles, but an obvious solution to my problem!

The Prosilver theme is provided for those people who want the 'old' look and feel and/or a narrower theme, but it doesn't receive any of the customisation that the others do.

If you click on the Re: xxxxx for any of the replies the post number is appended to the URL which allows you to save a link to a particular reply. E.g. jimlad68's tip about the *:
