Incontrovertibly true.
However, arguing that the old theme was better because some people could see 'more'/'everything' on one screen is not (IMO) true. Some people could, but couldn't be guaranteed that it would always be so. Some people couldn't and don't understand why that's now seen as a disadvantage as they've always had to use their scroll bar/buttons.
As I loathe orange

, the new theme isn't as good as the old one in one respect, but it's hardly a show-stopper given the other advantages (legibility and suitability for the wider range of devices in use these days).

I have adjusted the theme a little more so it's a bit more compressed.
I have also worked on the plugins help view, so I think it works on most browsers and the help window.

Shrinking the header has helped reduce the amount of orange -- thanks!
Is the pink "error bar" I get across the top of the knowledge base fixable?

Thanks Jane. As Helen says, shrinking the header makes the page less glaringly orange, as well as saving space.
I also like the fact that in General Usage the old sections for specific versions of FH have now moved to the bottom, so you see the active forum first.

The Plugin
Help & Advice pages are better (no sidebar) but there are still some issues to resolve.
(1) Image Text Flow
Usually images positioned to the left or to the right allow text to flow alongside them, but not currently in the Plugin mode pages.
e.g.
plugins:help:change_any_fact_tag:change_any_fact_tag|> Change Any Fact Tag Plugin and
plugins:help:find_duplicate_individuals:find_duplicate_individuals|> Find Duplicate Individuals Plugin, etc...
I guess it is something to do with
class="mediaright" and
class="medialeft"
(2) Everything Bigger
Everything seems to have got bigger, with larger fonts and larger images, which means that help that used to fit in a standard Plugin
Help & Advice window no longer fits neatly.
A side effect of this is in
Firefox 28.0 the Plugin
Help & Advice pages merge the top few pixels of page titles into the top black bar (whereas IE 11 has no black bar at all):

- MergedHeader.png (3.76 KiB) Viewed 13171 times
(3) Table of Contents
The
ToC still appears top right instead of below sidebar, where in the past it would have been hidden in Plugin
Help & Advice pages. I could add
~~NOTOC~~ to all the Plugin Help pages, but it would be better if the ToC moved below sidebar, as per the style you introduced last year.

I thought I had fixed the merge on FF, did you remember to Press F5?
The images will have to stay like they are for now, it's a function of the IE6. I prefer the larger fonts on the main pages. It might be possible to make them smaller on the Help pages.
The TOC should be starting compressed now. Again press F5 or clear your cache to check on FF, Chrome and IE 11.

Yes, that is a great deal better.
As there had been no mention of fixes for Firefox, I did not think to use F5/Refresh.
Why is text flow around images a function of IE6? It used to work OK before with the old KB with Shell.Explorer.1.
It is not only text that is bigger, but either the images are bigger or the margins are bigger, because images that used to sit side by side no longer fit in the same space.
Yes, the ToC starts compressed (and is hidden in Plugin Help) but the drop-down to uncompress does not work in any browser!
When editing Plugin Help & Advice pages it used to be possible to edit the whole page, but it this no longer possible because the Edit this page option is in the top bar, which is hidden in Plugin Help & Advice pages. Editing pages piecemeal can get quite tedious, and is difficult to review the whole page layout, without repeatedly using Save and Edit, which clogs up the Version log.

Another strange effect in all browsers and Plugin Help is that if the window is made narrow enough a blue bar appears across the top of the window saying
skip to content in white:

Because the old text scheme supported the out of date rendering from IE6 better than the new one does. I suspect there is an overlay script which is not rendering correctly, but it's difficult to track down without being able to reproduce the fault in a modern browser with inspect element.
The blue bar is a design feature for phone users, if you don't want to see it don't make your window less that 480px wide.

When editing Plugin Help & Advice pages it used to be possible to edit the whole page, but it this no longer possible because the Edit this page option is in the top bar, which is hidden in Plugin Help & Advice pages.
If you want to edit a page, just stick &do=edit on the end of the url, or I can turn back on the header bar.

It goes away for signed in users. I think it's actually a bug in DokuWiki and I have not had time to track it down. Modern responsive templates are tricky to work with.

For
Firefox there is the add-on
IE Tab 4.0.20130422 from
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... serprofile
This has the same IE6 image rendering problems as the Plugin Help pages, and may give the debug access you need.
Once installed, on any
Firefox tab right-click and select
Switch rendering engine or
View Page in IE Tab depending on whether you click on the tab or in the window.
In all my browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome) the blue bar appears at about 780 to 810 pixels.
I can manage with the
&do=edit thanks.
I notice you have reduced the left margin in Plugin Help pages. If the right margin could be similarly reduced, or page width increased, then that would be great. Currently it does initially display wider, but then instantly becomes narrower.

I still see the pink bar when I am signed in. (Using Firefox browser) However it is not very obtrusive.

It goes away for me when I'm signed into the wiki.

I have found a way around the Help for the plugins. I have loaded a plugin called "loadskin" which allows me to load the old theme just for the plugins:help|Plugins Help section.
I have moved the TOC to the sidebar, and worked out how to hide the error block when people are not signed into the Wiki.

Thanks, Jane, for these latest improvements. The only problem I'm still seeing is that after visiting the
Plugin Help & Advice page, the
TRACE bar includes:
PLUGIN HELP & ADVICE
for which
View page source (in Chrome) shows:
Code: Select all
<a href="/wiki/doku.php?id=plugins:help:index" class="wikilink1" title="plugins:help:index">Plugin Help & Advice</a>

Yes, thank you Jane, that has virtually restored both KB pages and Plugin Help pages to their previous layout.
I know you'll say I am never satisfied, but the right-hand margin in Plugin Help pages is still rather large, and larger than previously.
I am certain of this because images and text that previously sat side by side now have to be reduced in width to do so.
The & problem applies wherever there is an & in the heading title.
e.g. plugins:run_time_memory_use_advice|> Run Time & Memory Use Advice

Just remove the & from the titles and replace with "and"
I am not seeing the wide margin, the old template has not been changed, it's probably just a cached style sheet file somewhere.

I have changed the default style to the new theme. If you really want the old style go to your user control panel>board settings and select "CA GEN 2"

This screen no longer displays properly on my ipad, I assume that is because of the changes. Do you have any plans to make it appear properly on a tablet again?

Plugin Help pages now all OK - ( I had to re-open FH to fix the margin.)
I have changed most of the & into and in KB page titles.
The forms at fhugdownloads:add_downloads|> How to Add Downloads and Links and links:add_a_link|> Add a Member Web Site Link do not seem as neat as before.
In particular the tag topic boxes are not expanded, so users may not notice all the tags.
Is there an update for the Bureaucracy Plugin?

Unfortunately, I don't have an iPad so it's not easy for me to test on that device. Can you do a screen shot or explain exactly what is wrong, I may be able to patch a fix in for iPads, while keeping the padding the same for people who do not like the white space.
edit: Just to add I have used 3 or 4 of the iPad emulators online and it appears to be fine on them, can you try clearing your cache on the iPad and see if that helps.

I have added some extra css for the plugin on the theme. I think it's a bit better.

Yes, the forms are now much as I remember them on IE, Firefox & Chrome, thank you Jane.
On a 7" Android Chrome there are some difficulties using the KB.
Using the usual two finger technique to zoom, the body of the page expands, but also the top black bar expands so much that little of the body remains, especially in landscape orientation.
In portrait orientation it is a bit better but the pesky skip to content blue bar keeps interrupting.
The forms we have been discussing are almost unusable, especially the Description and Tags boxes that are almost impossible to expand, but perhaps that is too much to expect.
