Family Historian User Group

One of my relatives has an name with an accented character, like the French a acute.  How can I record this?  There is an item on the wish list for an easier way to access the charater map but I can't see even the harder way!  I tried creating the name in a word processor and pasting from the clipboard but that didn't work.

I have a few relatives with names that have accented characters, e.g. Oisín; Gráinne; DeRomaña etc.

When I need an accented character I open the Windows Character Map program, choose the character I require - Select>Copy - and Paste the character in FH in its position in the word, which is what I've done above.

Some characters in Character Map have Keystrokes, e.g. ©, which is Alt+0169 (press the Alt key and, at the same time, enter the numbers 0169). This enters the character directly into some programs without the need to select and copy. I've not found FH helpful in this respect!

The following web page lists many accented and other special characters that can be entered by holding down the ALT key and typing 0nnn (using only the numeric keypad) then releasing the ALT key. FH seems to handle such accented characters OK, and shows the accented capital letter if a surname with an accented letter is displayed in upper case.

I use a lot of accented characters and find Lexibar (http://www.lexicool.com) to be a very simple (and free) way of typing these. It is available for many languages.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work well with Family Historian, and for that I use a shareware program called Accentype (http://www.avisoft.co.uk) which is less simple, but gives a good range of accents.

Using a Windows PC, if you want just want an e with an acute accent (é) then all you have to do is press the e and AltGr keys together.
