Hi - is it possible to add flags to sources so that the flags automatically appear when a source is cited?

Many thanks,

In FH, a Flag as such can only be attached to a record for an Individual.  But I wonder if what you are actually hoping to achieve is to have an Icon shown on an Individual's box in a diagram when a Source has been cited for that Individual.  There are various methods that can be used for that.

If you use ancestral sources for entering, you can asign a flag to each census, If a flag doesn't exist then you can create one.

Hi,

Yes, I was meaning an icon - how would I assign an Icon to appear in a diagram to a source?

Open the type of diagram you want to modify.
Right click on a blank area.
Choose Diagram options:
On the boxes tab choose add condition; Record flag; than choose the icon from those available.
repeat for each flag you want an icon for.
There are some very good census and other icons available in the download area.
Remember to save your diagram as a custom diagram for it to be always available.

To assign an Icon directly on the use of a source you would need to add an expression rather than a flag.

Just build up the expresion you need.

So for example I have a general GRO source which I use when I do not have a certificate.

So to check if it's used against a birth I would use

Code: Select all

=IsTrue(RecordId(%INDI.BIRT.SOUR>%) = 25)
Where 25 is the record ID for my GRO source.

Sorry for being thick.

In the Diagram Options dialog, on the Boxes tab, you need to click the << Add Condition button and then click on Expression.  This brings up the Enter Expression dialog.  Enter the expression you need and click OK.  This should bring up the Box Features dialog where you can select the Icon you want.

Hi All,

OK, sorrrry but this I feel may be 'stupid question time' !!

Could some kind soul please take pity and explain to me the purpose of Flags and Icons in relation to Sources?

I've been reading the threads, but can't really find a basic explanation, overview advantages etc anywhere.

Apologies for being dim.

Thanks,
Fred.

Flags & Icons are purely an aide memoir to highlight a particular type of information.

What information you want to highlight, and what Flags or Icons you choose, are entirely a personal choice.
So you could choose a particular Icon to show that a particular type of Source has been researched and linked to an Individual.
Similarly, Ancestral Sources can automatically add a Flag to Individuals to show that a Census Fact & Source or a Baptism Fact & Source has been entered.

A point to remember is that Flags can only be attached to Individual Records (not other Record types nor Facts), and Icons can only be attached to Diagram Boxes but can be invoked by many Conditions not just Flags.
