Using FH v 4 have saved on a flash drive and want to take it with me interstate and use on my small notebook while on holiday, which does not have FH installed, FH won't open from flash drive would this be correct? or have I done something wrong?[frown]

No you need to install Family Historian on your Notebook. You can then read the data from the flash drive.

Personally I would install the program and copy the Project folder to the Notebook, the license allows you to install FH on two computers as long as they are for you own use and you don't use them concurrently.

FYI: There is a known problem with FH saving to a USB Memory Stick/Flash Drive.
It currently cannot save directly to the drive letter.
There must be at least one root folder previously created on the USB Memory Stick/Flash Drive to which the Project can be copied.
This problem has been fixed in the forthcoming FH V5.

When I want to save my projects to a flash drive I open the 'Family Historian Projects' folder then right click on each project folder as needed. I then run down the offered list to 'send to' and choose usb device.
I then use copy & paste to get the folder from the flash drive to the other computer.

Many thanks for quick replies Jane, PWE and Latewise. Before I do anything I must admit after posting my question, I downloaded the 30day trial of V3 and put in my registration key which was accepted, then I trf from USB my work which trf okay, but naturally it looks different on the v3 than v4.1.3, so should I uninstall v3 and download v4 or possibly it wont work with the key reg.# I should not have jumped in so early thought I would be waiting for a while for a reply and it would be after I left for my trip.(sorry)

Assuming bought a V4 upgrade, you will need to install from the link on your purchase email over the top of your V3.

If you did not keep a copy of the upgrade email support at family historian and ask them to extend your download for you.

Many thanks again for the help and advice. Calico Pie extended my download for v4 thanks very much. Just about all set now except one problem (my fault) after downloading the upgrade for v4 I imported data from the flash drive and it all went well but I notice I have approx 130 individuals not on the new project that is on the old computer, so do I delete from the usb flash drive what I had on it and try to import, and will it just add the ones missing or will it merge with what I already have there and would end up double the individuals??
By now you must realise I am new to this plus Blonde!

On Your old computer, go to the projects folder, find your project foler, the right click and 'Send To' your flash drive. Move to flash drive to your notebook and copy the project folder into the projects folder, The one you have already created will be overwritten, not merged. That way you will have both the same.

Okay now I am cooking with gas. Thank you for the help.
Just finished what Johnmorrission suggested and now have the correct nunber of individuals and families. Thank you all for your time in helping me.

Now you have got your data sorted, there may be FH settings for Diagrams, and Custom Queries, etc, that you may want to transfer from PC to Notebook.

Is now a good moment to mention DropBox? I only ask this because the benefits of having your files updating the other machine without having to copy and transfer files via usb sticks etc are well worth the small effort involved in setting it up. - and it's free! I appreciate barbaramac has sorted her problem out but anyone working on two machines is going to need the files being synchronised. Dropbox does this for you almost instantly and completely transparently. Any changes I make to FH records or additions (and deletions) of multimedia are there on the other m/c when I next log on. Do give it a try.

I agree,
I have moved my projects folder to dropbox, so no worries there. I also use synctoy to sync the application data floder to a flash drive and the to whichever computer I'm using.
Apparantly dropbox are working on an update to allow you to choose folders to sync, without actually moving them into rthe dropbox folder.
It would be less easy to set up, but easier to use.

Thanks for the suggestion of dropbox I have just downloaded it onto both computers and set it up haven't used it yet but sounds like its just what I need.

Just one word of warning about DropBox and it is to do with linked multimedia. I have one machine linked to the multimedia and find the netbook does not sync with it as the path ie the file descriptions do not quite match up as I have XP on the netbook and Windows 7 on the pc. Having remapped the files a couple of times on each machine only to find they were wrong on the other I resolved it by deciding which machine I wanted to display pictures in diagrams and have census and certificates displaying and then stuck with that.
It does not cause any problems as I use the netbook for away from home research ( and sitting in front of the TV!)and have got used to not having the files linked on it although of course you can still access any pictures, certificates etc via the data file within your DropBox folder.
The benefits of having the data synced between machines far outweighs any multimedia issues and one day I'll get the paths resolved or get Windows 7 on both machines.

If you change your multimedia to have relative, rather than absolute, paths, then the linking problem will go away.
My paths are all set to relative.
I have W7 64bit on one machine and Xp 32 bit on another, and no problems with multi media.

The relative path setting is the default for V4 Projects if you copy Multimedia image files into the Media folder or a sub-folder.
This is another advantage of using V4 Projects.

For some reason I always have problems when trying to use Projects rather than Gedcom files. I only have the one tree and if a Project with relative paths is the answer then I'll try again.
