Query for Certain People
Just wondered if anyone could explain if there is any way to do a query to list the direct ancestors of a person, together with their siblings and the spouses of just ancestors and their siblings. My tree is so big now but just want to have a diagram containing these people.
I know there is a split tree option but I am not sure about that and just wondered if there was any easier solution. I am still having trouble grasping certain queries.
I would be grateful for any help, thanks

If you specify an All Relatives diagram and use the Diagram Option to specify Generations Up = All and Generations Down = 1, the diagram should show only ancestors and siblings of ancestors and their spouses.

Peter's suggestion is almost there.
Under Generations Down: 1 you also need to set ...counting down from each ancestor instead of the default root.

Thanks for your replies, that shows me how to do a diagram which is great, but Sorry I didn`t explain it properly, I am looking to get my tree printed but I only want my direct ancestors, plus their siblings and spouses. I do not want any generations down from them which are on my original tree. I think maybe I am looking to do a query for those people and then save it as another gedcom file to send off for printing.
Hope this makes sense, is there an easy way to do this using a query then the split tree helper.
Thanks again

The same principle can be achieved using a Query. The following Row Filters should produce the desired result:

The third filter excludes any descendants of the Starting Person and their spouses.
The fourth filter excludes siblings of the Starting Person and their spouses; this filter should be omitted if this is not what is wanted.

Thanks Peter, I will have a try with that.

I cant do this, cant even think where to start. Is there any chance of talking me through the query step by step. I love this programme but just cannot get the hang of queries at all.
Sorry to be a pain.

Have a look at the Knowledge Base article on Creating a Query at
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... ng_a_query
Then when you get stuck at a particular stage, we can give more advice.

Query for Certain People
Hi, sorry about this but I have managed to make some types of query so I can sort of do this, but I just dont know where to start with this one, should I be looking for generation or ancestor etc., in the fields, so that I can get to the expression that you mention. I am thinking that maybe I will have to give up on this unless I can be talked through it step by step by some very kind person and just go through every individual and delete them if I dont want them.
Any offers of help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

Peter has already give you all the lines for the Rows tab, what can't you work out how to enter?

Marilyn,
You said earlier you want a diagram to send off for printing.
I am still sure that the original suggestion of setting the Diagram Options of Generations Down: 1 and ...counting down from each ancestor will do what you want.
See the related General topic thread Print family tree at
http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... y&num=5587
This talks about how to use specialist printers who work from your Project plus an FH Chart, or alternatively using PDF files saved from your diagram.
I both cases it does not matter how much is in your full database tree, it is what is in the Diagram/Chart/PDF that matters.
