Importing GEDCOM, Keeping Record IDs

I have a GEDCOM, previously part of my main project, which I would now like to re-import to the main project again. If I merge it, it creates new ID numbers, but I would like to keep the same IDs as I know they are not duplicated in the project.

Can someone please tell me how to do it?

First of all with this sort of update work with copies of your GEDCOMs, or ensure you have adequate backups.

Also remember, if you are merging then assuming some Records are duplicated, then the merged Records cannot retain the Record Id of both original Records.
Note that Record Id apply not just to Individual Records but every type of Record - Family, Note, Source, Repository, Multimedia,...

Use the Tools > Work with Record Identifiers option.
Read the Caution at the top.
Choose the Record Type.
Assuming you do not already use either Custom Id or Automated Record Id then select Copy existing record ids into the Custom/Automated Record field.

Then after the merge reverse the process by using the Generate new record ids by copying Custom/Automated Record values.

Debbie, you have me fascinated with your reasons for wanting to retain the old Record Id.
Would you be prepared to share you reasons with us?

LOL, of course! When I made the move to Family Historian, I thought I was being clever by separating out trees that didn’t link in with my main one, thinking I would move them in when I found the connection. I have previously sent reports to a distant cousin, who always uses their ID numbers when corresponding about the family, so by keeping the same IDs it will not to cause any confusion!

Perhaps, use the the Tools > Work with Record Identifiers option and copy Record Ids to Custom Ids and keep them there indefinitely.
Then whenever you split/merge the Custom Ids will be retained whatever happens to the Record Ids.
It is just as easy to add Custom Ids to Reports, Diagrams, etc as Record Ids.
You just need to remember to use Tools > Work with Record Identifiers option to Generate new record ids by copying Custom values when necessary, or to create new Custom Ids for new Individuals.
