Correct usage of 'Place' and 'Address'

Or is there one.
Up to now I have been using:
'Place' to store - Town, County, Country
'Address' to Store - 'House/Property name' & No., Street pt1, Street pt2
However other posts seem to indicate that address should contain everything, which seems like unnecessary duplication.

Me too!
The GEDCOM 5.5 Standard has:
ADDRESS_STRUCTURE: =
n ADDR {0:1}
+1 CONT {0:M}
+1 ADR1 {0:1}
+1 ADR2 {0:1}
+1 CITY {0:1}
+1 STAE {0:1}
+1 POST {0:1}
+1 CTRY {0:1}
n PHON {0:3}
The address structure should be formed as it would appear on a mailing label using the ADDR and ADDR.CONT lines. These lines are required if an ADDRess is present. Optionally, additional structure [ADR1 to CTRY] is provided for systems that have structured their addresses for indexing and sorting.
I would think that
POST and
PHON are most likely to be used as part of a Repository Address.

See
Knowledge Base advice on
Places & Addresses.
For formal
BMD &
Census facts, I use
Place to hold the
GRO Registration District in the format
District, County, Country.
Other facts use similar
Place details relevant to the date of the fact.
My
Address fields hold data such as
House Name/Number, Street, Town, County, Postcode.
My reasons are that surprisingly often the
GRO District and the
Postal Address have different place names and counties.
Also to help locate addresses, a modern
Postal Address with
Postcode is useful.

I do what John does as I don't like repeating data. The whole place/address side of GEDCOM is pretty poor really. I know that if I ever need to produce a full address I can just combine the address and place. I do accept though that postcode doesn't fit into this scenario but then I don't have postcodes recorded for anyone in my tree.
I'm sure it would easy for a plugin to be made available for version 5 to join any existing place fields onto the end of address fields for anyone who wants to start recording the full address.
For those of you who do repeat the place within the address, if all you had for an event was a place such as 'Chester, Cheshire, England' would you immediately also put that in the address field or do you only put something in the address field when you have a road or house name, etc?

I'll agree with John - no duplication for me, thank you.
(The implication from GEDCOM is that duplication should occur as there's no implication that it's a part-address - and if you wanted to insert a post code, it would look pretty odd without the full address. However, why would I have post-codes for events in the 1800s, 1700s, etc?)

As I said, I work out and save postcodes so that, for instance, Geolocators will pinpoint the 1800s/1700s locations on modern maps.
