Are Flags, Place Lists etc. universal or project

If I add places or religions or flags, are they universal across all projects or are they saved per project, or is it a choice?

Flags are universal across your PC and any other PC that share your C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily HistorianFlags folder.

Places and Religions and all the other data listed under Tools > Work with Data are local to each Project and derived from the fields with the same name in Facts and Sources within that Project.

To my knowledge there is no definition of the scope of FH entities.
Many features such as Flags, Queries, Fact Sets, Text Schemes, etc, are universal.
Others that are GEDCOM features, such as Individuals, Places, Source Types, Repositories, Multimedia ... the list is extensive, are Project specific.

Some users would like all the features to be Project specific, but with the ability to Import/Export between Projects, or otherwise define the scope of items.

You have pinpointed the need for some Help to identify which items are universal and which are not.

Thank you for the additional useful assistance.

Finding answers sometimes 'seems' not to be intuitive especially when some other knowledge 'seems' to be needed first to show the path. I believe that to be the 'experience' and knowledge of those that have gone before me, possibly encountering similar problems.
Hopefully all those knowledgeable 'usual suspects' can forgive an occasional stupidity.

That is deeply philosophical and reassuring. However, I think a question is stupid if the answer is obvious, but if the answer 'should' be obvious then I agree with you.

Incredibly useful, concise and clearly written.
This should save a lot of questions (providing of course it can be easily found). Perhaps it should be in a more important and prominent place, perhaps a 'sticky' on the forum.

As has been said .... incredibly useful and interesting. BUT could I ask for an easier to understand title, please? I'm not sure I would find it with that title if I was looking for advice in the Knowledge Base. I will definitely want to find it again!

Thankyou Tatewise - good stuff. Particularly useful to me was the advice to back up the FH Programme Data folder. This was not something that I used to do but I will now that you have clearly explained the reason to do so.

Like others I think what you have written is excellent and puts together in one place lots of related information. You asked for ideas on the title.

With the existing title I would expect an explanation of what the many (and varied) features of FH actually do. I think what you have written is an explanation of all the settings of FH, where they are stored and how they operate on the features.

The problem then becomes a balance between a snappy title and one which says what it does on the tin. Something like 'Understanding Settings - how they work and where they are stored.'

The problem is the choice between a snappy title and a more explanatory lengthy title.

However, the article does intentionally cover a bit more than just FH settings.
I don't consider features such as Custom Queries, FH Charts, Named Lists, or Record Flags as 'FH settings', but it is still handy to know where they are stored.
That is why the title is so difficult to choose.

If you use the Knowledge Base Search box, then 'settings' does list Understanding the Scope of Features first with 21 Hits. Likewise if you search for 'features' it is top with 11 Hits.

But I guess that's far too simplistic! I'm just thinking about trying to find (quickly!) the right information without becoming discouraged by trawling through searches. I know ..... I'm lazy!

That is certainly 'snappy' Anne.
I have added an alternative title and FAQ of Which of your Projects are affected by each Preference Setting and Command Option?.

The focus of the article is meant to be more on, which Projects are affected, than where stuff is stored.
The Move Family Historian Settings article is more focussed on where stuff is stored.
