Hi everyone,

Not being technically minded to the degree of this question, your comments would be appreciated. I've been thinking about buying a Tablet device, iPad or similar. How, if at all, would it be possible to use FH4 (and soon, cos I've ordered it: FH5) on a Tablet device? My laptop is still a hefty piece of equipment to be hauling around libraries, churches, graveyards and so on. It would make sense to have a smaller device. Any thoughts?

Rather than spend a fortune on a tablet I purchased a netbook for about £300.
Large hard drive, runs all programms that I want, Quad speed Atom processor and at least 6 hours of battery usage, more if I turn off the WiFi.
Ok, there is no DBVD drive but plug in a USB drive (£30)and you are away. I don't think that a Ipad can handle a DVD drive.
Anyway the netbook works for me and is not much larger than the Ipad.

I just looked for a good battery life (My HP was quoted as 8/9 hours), I get 6+ whilst using WiFi, as many USB ports a possible (mine has 3), I would have liked an HD port to connect to a TV, and a decent Atom processor.
Also I made sure I could increase the Ram to 2Gb, cost me £10, the shop took the installed 1Gb in part exchange.
My HP came with Windows Starter which is OK but is missing a few minor functions, some come with the Windows Home version.
I was lucky that when windows was installed it chose the 32bit version not 64bit, this allowed me to run some older programms and hardware that won't run on my new desktop which is 64bit.

I did have one problem in that I couldn't access FindMyPast using Internet explorer until Nick helped me out and I downloaded Google Chrome, all fine now.
I run FH on it, although I had to rearrange my screen layout to make it fit.
Hope this helps you make your choice.

If you have a fairly recent tv, probably of the flat screen variety, it should have a PC or VGA connector on the back (or side). Every netbook and laptop has a VGA connector on it somewhere and you just use a standard VGA cable to connect the netbook/laptop to the TV.

I was looking at Tablets last year and also settled for a netbook.
I have an Acer Aspire One 753.

Re - djac & VGA port.
I did connect to it but the HP netbook has limited resolution control and I couldn't fill the flat screen TV.
My wife's laptop does have an HD port, although an improvement it still only filled about two thirds of the screen, so in hind sight I don't think my wish for an HD port would have helped much.

You could try changing the screen resolution on the laptop to fill the TV screen. It worked for me!!

Just a thought. Clearly I don't know how you configured the settings for the TV connection.

The netbook would probably configure the TV display as a clone of the netbook display by default, which would then limit the resolution of the TV display to that of the netbook display.

The displays should be configured as extended desktop, then you should be able to set the resolution of the TV display to one more appropriate for that device.

Apologies if you have already explored this.
