Page breaks in Sources section

Post by lesleyl » 04 Mar 2012 20:02

I was trying to tidy up an Individual Summary Report. I've spotted how to start the Sources section on a new page, but because I like to include my images, I often get the situation where the source title and the image are on different pages.

Is there a 'Keep together'-type option somewhere that would let me keep a source and the corresponding image together in the Sources section?

The formatting here depends on how much text you have chosen to include in the Sources tab.
This text appears between the Source Title and the Image(s).

You can exercise some control over all the Source Title headers that sometimes helps keep them with their Image(s).

In the Report > Options > Format tab, under Hdg Style select Hdg Level 2.
Click the Edit button to open the Heading Style window.
At the bottom, alter Keep with Next to increase the number of lines.
Click OK twice, and review the resulting changes.
Experiment with different numbers of lines until you get the best effect.

The number of lines required will probably vary from Report to Report, and on how much text you have chosen to include in the Sources tab.

Page breaks in Sources section

Sorry, but I'm still struggling with the layout of sources. (a) With an individual narrative report, the 'Sources' title is smaller than with the Descendant report. How can I make these the same?
(b) With an individual narrative report, Hdg Level 2 doesn't seem to appear in the Hdg Style section, so I can't change the 'Keep with next Lines' for this

I have moved to V5 now, but I'm still quite disappointed at the lack of flexibility in layout of Sources. So much has been done to improve charting and other areas of reports, but this area seems to have been overlooked. My 'day job' is a technical author, documenting engineering software and would never even consider separating an image from the related technical text. For me, it's also a real issue that you have to make tweaks to each report that you generate.

(a) & (b) are linked.

Unfortunately, in Individual Narrative Reports the Report Options < Format tab erroneously omits the settings for Heading Level 2.
This means you cannot Edit the Font nor the Style for the Sources heading.

In Descendant Narrative Reports the Heading Level 2 settings apply to both the ... Generation headings and the Sources heading.
So by Editing these settings you could set the Sources heading to match the Individual Narrative Reports but the ... Generation headings would change too.

Although Reports are a useful feature in FH, I do not consider they are its primary function, which is the genealogy data management.
It is possible to save the Reports in RTF format and word-process them to suit your needs.

I believe some users export the GEDCOM data to other (online) software and produce alternative reports that way.
