Copying from CD to FH
Had to format HD as I had a virus in PC.Made a copy of all
entries in FH program on to a CD.Need advice on how to get all the info on the CD back into the program.I dragged the info from the CD in to the program, and it works Ok,however when I switch off and then startup the program all the info has disappeared, just blank pages.I have the Maternal side of the family back to the 10th century,I have now commenced on the Paternal side and am back at the 1700`s.Surely there is a simple way of transferring data from a CD or other device into the program.I have to admit I am a Newbie as regards this program,so please can someone let me know in simple terms how to import the info from the CD to the FH program.
An email with detailed info would be very helpful.
There is no info of any help in the booklet I received with the program.
I apologise for my ignorance,I am 80 years old,I am hoping to finish my family tree before I become one of the ancestors.
Thank you for reading my request.
Kind regards

Copying from CD to FH
Hi kenmac
Without knowing exactly what you copied to the CD and how you did this it is difficult to give any detailed advice.
However, you need to start off by ignoring Family Historian and instead using Windows explorer to copy the files off the CD back into your 'My Documents' (I'm assuming this is where you originally copied them from).
You've not said which version of Family Historian you use but you then you need to open up Family Historian and then open the file (or project if using Family Historian 4) from your My Documents. Don't try and open the version that is on your CD as that will be read only.
If you need more detailed help then please give a lot more information about what you copied onto the CD, which version of Family Historian you use, etc.
Cheers
Nick

You need to copy that file back into your newly created My Documents and then open it in Family Historian. Does that help?

Nick,
Forgot to tell you I am using Windows 7.
When I try what you say I keep getting the following error message.
Family History
'Cannot save file'
' C:usersKenmacAPPDataLocalTEmpTemp3Kenmac2-2010-04-04 1952.zipKenmac2.GED is READ Only.Do You wish to save the file under another name'.
I will keep trying.

I think you must be opening the file from the CD.
Don't do that, If you are using FH V3 simply use windows explorer to copy the .GED file to the Documents folder on Windows 7, then right click on the file and select properties and check the read only option at the bottom is not ticked.

Just to add to Jane's answer, I see you're using a zipped file. You could try the following:
Right-click on the file Kenmac2-2010-04-04 1952.zip which I assume is on your CD and then select 'Extract All'
A dialogue box should appear which says 'Select a destination and extract files'. Click on the Browse... button.
You now need to select where you want the file to be copied to. Being Windows 7 I think you should select 'Libraries' and then 'My Documents'. You may wish to create a folder in your My Documents to put the file(s) into and then select that folder and click OK.
Now press the Extract button. This should extract all the files that are in the zip folder into the folder.
Now go into your My Documents and double-click on the file. It should have a little icon with three green squares on it. This signifies that it will open in Family Historian. Once it is in Family Historian try saving it.

Nick,
All`s well with the world,I finally got the program working. Thanks to the other members who wrote in,your advice is very much appreciated.I deleted all of the copies I had in My Documents, and left just one.It loaded ok.I note that each time I do a backup it puts a new dated copy in My Documents.
I daresay the first signs of senility are beginning to sprout in my 80 year old brain.
It is very gratifying to receive such a quick response to a query.
Many thanks to you all.
Kind regards,
Ken

You couuld create a folder in your My Documents to put the backups in e.g. call it 'FH Backups'. Then in Family Historian go to Tools menu, select Preferences and then the Backup tab. You can then select the folder you've created. This should keep your My Documents tidier as Family Historian will always save the backups there.
I'm glad things are now working OK.
Nick
