'Use specified name' in Record Matching Options

Post by robinh916 » 24 Oct 2007 18:08

If would be helpful if FH allowed a name to be selected in the 'Record Matching Options' dialogue so that this name was used as the 'match' in the matching processing when importing a Gedcom file. It would also be useful if this name could also be pre-selected from the 'Records Window' before you instigate the 'Merge/Compare File..' command.

When you get to the 'Record Matching Option' dialogue there could be a new radio button to say 'Use pre-selected name' and/or a control that would allow you to pre-select a name before you go into the matching process.

With a large family tree you can end up with a long list of similar names eg. John Harlow. When importing say a Gedcom from the IGI for a John Harlow christening it would be useful to pre-select the John Harlow to be used in the matching process. This would mean the names in both files don't have to be perfectly matched eg. importing a christening entry for a John Harlowe or for a Jhon Harlow and matching it to John Harlow.

When importing a christening entry then the matching process would use the specified John Harlow as the 'match' whatever the spelling of the imported name and also match the parent's names to the existing parents, if these parents already existed.

When importing a marriage entry then the matching process would match to the specified John Harlow whatever the spelling of the imported name and also match the wife's name to the existing wife, if the wife already existed.

The process could then carry on to the normal 'Merge File' diaglogue screen.
