Add PLACE and SOURCE to Multimedia objects

Post by IanHiggs » 14 Jan 2009 13:45

When adding photos, it is often good to add details of where the photo was taken. Currently, the only way is to include this in a note. This means that the place is not included in the Places list.

It is also good to record where the photo came from and the best place would be in a SOURCE record. Currently, the only way to do this is 'under' a dummy Note Record.

So, allow a Multimedia object to include a _PLACE custom field and a _SOURCE custom field in the same way that it currently allows a _DATE custom field.

Add PLACE and SOURCE to Multimedia objects

I create a source in Family Historian to record the provenance of the photo, then attach the multimedia object to the source record.

Add PLACE and SOURCE to Multimedia objects

See May 2009 discussion in mailing list about adding a Source Citation to Multimedia Records.

It should be possible to store where a multimedia record has come from (e.g. book title), where within that (e.g. page number), who holds copyright, rights of reproduction, etc.

It should be noted that the DRAFT GEDCOM 5.5.1 and the (unseen by me) correction to GEDCOM 5.5 included a Source Citation tag 'below' the multimedia record. This may be an appropriate design, providing the software can deal with the possibility of circular references if the source thus cited 'contains' the same multimedia.

FH already copes with circular references as notes can contain sources which can contain notes which can contain sources which can contain notes whic..........
