Export to Ancestry

Post by PaulDesmondWhite » 23 Oct 2009 02:06

Why can't i have clear-cut rules for what Ancestry accepts as a 'valid' GEDCOM, and why won't FH give me a suitably clean export function?

The only advice i've ever seen in this regard is to chuck out all notes, flags, custom IDs, user-defined tags, change dates, and anything else not invented before 1066.

I'd like to carry on using FH not FTM.

I'd like to export my trees to Ancestry.

I'd like to get the job done without spending hours fixing problems.

Please put that on the menu.

Export to Ancestry

(and there was me thinking I was getting to be the GOM of this site, second only to Jon of course)...

I think the only way to do this usefully is to have a Custom Export feature. I regularly export for Ancestry, Genes Reunited and Tribal Pages, and have to keep notes of which query to use and what fields to include or exclude for each. I'm sure other people would make different specific choices for each (and other) sites depending on what they use the site for.

And sites like that change over time. I wouldn't want FH to 'know' how the site worked when FH was last released and not let me change it.

But it's never that bad... I don't spend hours (indeed any time at all) fixing problems. I never update the tree on any of those sites directly. I just export, upload, and forget... it seems to work.
