I see that V5, when used in conjunction with Ancestral Sources, now re-opens with the same person. It would be very helpful if it would always do this.

I don't quite follow exactly what sequence of operations, you are performing to obtain that effect.

If you do NOT close FH while running AS, then when you close AS, and return to FH it will still have the original person selected, because FH was never closed.

If you close FH while running AS, then when you re-open FH it should have the current File Root person selected in the Focus window.

I wonder if Dave is referring to the fact that when you save in Ancestral Sources and then Family Historian reloads the file as it has changed, it now stays focused on the same individual, e.g. in the properties. I'm not at home to check this but I believe this isn't the case if, for example, you're looking at a diagram when it reloads.

Sorry, I missed the posts on this subject last month.

I don't use diagrams, so that would not help.

What I do is keep FH and AS open all the time when I am updating census info. After each census input operation, I save within AS. I then switch to FH, because I always want FH to be up to date. When I switch to FH, it asks if I want to re-load because it has spotted that AS has made changes. I answer Yes. FH always opens at my file root.

In fact, even if I were not using AS, I would prefer that when I open FH (say after a Windows reboot) it would start at the person I was last looking at.

Hi Dave,

I know exactly what you mean, as I used to do the same thing. My suggestion would be to use the Ancestral Sources Data Entry plugin for FH5, it makes it so much easier.

I have my options set to start with records window, and always have my records window sorted by 'updated'.
I use Mike Tate's plugin and have AS set to close on save.
That way, when FH reloads, the top person in the records view is one of the group of people I was working on in AS.
Obviously the same applies when I just start up, as last updated person is top.

In Family Historian 5, following a reload it does open with the individual you were last looking at in the focus window. Doesn't help if you were using the records window or diagram view but is certainly an improvement on earlier versions of FH.

Mine doesn't, and I raised the topic in another Forum, to be told it doesn't by design.
I've tried and re-tried, and it always opens with my root person (me)
I have no plugins

Don't confuse re-load with re-open.

Re-load is when the GEDCOM file is changed by another program (such AS) while FH stays open and prompts to re-load the GEDCOM file.

Re-open is when FH has been closed and is being re-opened from scratch.

Ah OK

Well in that case, I am used to opening other Genealogy programs (the main 3 I have used are MyHeritage Family Tree Builder, The Master Genealogist and Legacy) with the last person viewed/edited.

This I find most useful as a reminder of who I was last working on.
With Family Historian, if I left it for several days/weeks I would have no clue as to who that was, as it always opens at the Root person.

A Toggle in options would be very nice, so that those who prefer this way of working could do so, and those who prefer the current, could also continue as is.

Personally, being used to previous behaviour (as above), I find this very frustrating.

I would add my vote to this
