Running FH from a USB Stick

A lot of my work is done in an environment where it isn't possible to install software on the host computer (i.e. in a public library), but programs which are self-contained on a USB Stick will run (Roots Magic-to-go for instance). It would be nice if FH would run from a USB Stick, then I could use my program of choice - and be able to teach its use to my students.[smile]

I think you can create a Portable version of FH using
http://www.cameyo.com/ you would just need to open your Project using the More Tasks button rather than from the list, as the USB stick's drive letter is likely to keep changing on different computers.

Has anyone actually done this? When I went to the download at the Cameyo site my AV (Norton Internet Security) gave me all sorts of dire warnings, so I didn't proceed.

The same thing happened to me. Sophos AV showed a virus - I didn't proceed.

I suspect the issue is that Cameyo needs to do some really low level stuff to grab the installer and redirect it.

It worked fine for me when I used it, but you do need to do it on a machine which has not had FH installed on it previously (I used a clean virtual machine).

I have found that some AV's even report Ancestral Sources as unsafe.

Software that doesn't have a certificate is sometimes reported as being potentially dodgy which is why AS gets flagged up. I'm not prepared to pay over a hundred pounds a year to add a certificate to a program that I give away free so it doesn't include a certificate. Although I don't enjoy having warnings shown about installing Ancestral Sources, I actually think its a reasonable precaution as the anti-virus software has no way of knowing whether it is genuine or a trojan without a certificate to support it so it warns the user to be cautious.
