[Wish List entry 601] Export to Markdown

Post by sbell95 » 11 Apr 2023 23:44

I like to write my research and individual notes using Markdown (.md) so that I can export them and use them in other programs. While it is currently possible to export reports in .txt format, it would be great to be able to export them in .md so that the citations and style codes are produced correctly.

In the example screenshot attached, you can see the .txt file produced by FH at the top. Below that, I have tweaked it slightly to conform to .md style - the main change is in the way citations are styled (eg [^1]) and the application of italics formatting (underscores) to the website name, which already has a field style code of italics in the FH template definition.

This might also pose a possible solution to Gary's recent request for hyperlinked source citations, as the .md file can easily be converted into a PDF (or any other file format) using Pandoc.

Scrivener can import Markdown files, so that would be one way of increasing the number of tools that can be used with FH7 reports. An increasing number of Genealogists are using Scrivener to re-organize their program report sections, insert additional notes and add stories with the result being a finished family history document formatted for print or ePubs.

I can see this being useful.

I love Markdown, and I wish more software supported it. It is so much easier to write and transport simple documents rather than using rtf.

Being able to export to Markdown would be very helpful to us Scrivener users.

Quick point of clarification before I create the Wish List entry.

Which flavour of Markdown do we want to see?

CommonMark?

Or something like GitHub Flavored Markdown Spec which supports tables.

Or do we just specify Markdown with support for notes produced by the Rich Text Editor?
