Property box icons
I would like to see an icon in the More column of the property box to display if a fact has a source/citation attached to it.
Mike has provided a temporary solution to prefix each fact with a particular text character to indicate a sourced fact.
This works well but a proper (larger) icon in the More column would be so much better.

Re: Property box icons
Yes, that sounds like a good idea and the obvious choice for an icon is the Source record yellow scroll icon.

Excellent suggestion.
The more I think about this, the more I wonder why it wasn't there already!

Re: Property box icons
As long as it could be turned off, I can see why this might suit the way some people work.
For me, it would be unwelcome clutter, and wouldn't actually tell me anything about the 'quality' of the source concerned -- a death certificate as a source for a birth event is Secondary Information, whereas a birth certificate is Primary Information. Just knowing I've got a source isn't of any use at all, in the way I work. A fact doesn't make it into my database if it doesn't have a source.

Re: Property box icons
Helen, would you also argue for the other More column icons to be selectively turned off?
The icons for Fact Witnesses, Media, and Notes don't really give the user much detail either.
If you don't know what Show Media settings are in force the Media could be Fact, Citation &/or Source.
However, those More icons do offer a single-click way of opening the associated dialogue.
So a benefit of having a Source icon is that it offers a single-click way of opening the Sources For Citation List pane without having to select the Fact and click the Show Sources toolbar icon. i.e. It is a useful shortcut, especially for users with smaller screens who cannot afford to have the Sources For Citation List pane open all the time.

Re: Property box icons
If this was introduced, yes, I would, because I'd be happy to get rid of all of them but other users find them useful, for reasons such as you have mentioned. In fact, if it was a side-effect of this wish to make them all optional, I'd be delighted. (An option to hid the column would do just as nicely for me but be less flexible for others).
My preferred methods of navigation don't rely on them.
Re Media, I know exactly what it will be, because I only use Source Media.
Notes are visible as soon as you select the Fact.
Witnesses are at the end of a double-click.
Hence I could cheerfully wave them all goodbye.

Re: Property box icons
But clicking the Note icon opens the Note Rich Text editor window which is a useful shortcut.
I guess you would be happy to 'overload' this request with the option(s) to make the More column icon(s) optional.

Yep. Even to make the whole column optional.
And yes, I know what clicking on the Note icon does. I prefer to double-click on the Note.

Re: Property box icons
I am with Helen on this one. For me it is also just so much clutter. I'd love to be able to hide the column entirely making more room for the Fact column.

As a "newbie" to Family History some years ago I started adding people without realising the importance of recording sources. I also imported parts of my tree from a Gedcom given to me by a second cousin which had no sources. I'm still working through finding and recording the missing sources so this would be very useful.

Re: Property box icons
An alternative to hiding the More column would be if the Facts tab column widths and positions were 'sticky' and remembered from session to session just like Records Window columns.
Then the More column could be dragged off the righthand edge of the Facts tab and stay there.
Currently, the columns do not even survive switching from person to person.
In fact, the Notes tab and Media tab columns could similarly be remembered for all Property Box types.
Can this be incorporated with the More icons or does it need a separate Wish List item?

Re: Property box icons
How would that work when switching between floating and docked when the width available is likely to be very different?

Re: Property box icons
With an annoying and unnecessary scrollbar at the bottom.
Remembering the column widths is a good idea, but not a substitute for hiding columns completely.

Re: Property box icons
The settings could be remembered separately for Docked and Floating modes.
That is similar to the Records Window column widths being separate from the Select Records popup columns widths.
Agreed the scroll bar would be a pain.

Re: Property Box icons
Are we all agreed on the initial request of an icon to show when a fact has a source/citation using the Source record yellow scroll icon? If so can that be added to the wish list so we can vote on it? The rest of the points need further refining.

Re: Propery box icons
As long as it's definitely optional as it's a backwards step for some of us.

Re: Property box icons
The discussion about the Sources For Citation List pane column adjustments for Source Rec, etc, is now in the new thread Preserve and Hide/Show Columns (21457).
I hope to propose some wording for the More column Sources icon request soon.

Re: Property box icons
Here is my proposed Wish List wording:
Title: Property Box Facts tab More column features
Category: Property Box
Description:
Issues
1) When reviewing Facts to check whether they have Source Citations, each Fact must be tediously selected in turn to view its Citation List pane. The Fact may be selected in the Facts tab, All tab, or the Sources For droplist.
Alternatively, a Query or Plugin must be run to perform the review.
2) The More column icons occupy space that may be better used for displaying extra Fact details.
Proposals
It is required that both proposals are implemented together.
1) Add an additional More column of Source record yellow scroll icons, where the icon indicates that there is at least one Source Citation for the Fact on that row.
Clicking the Source icon will open the Citation List pane, if not already open, and display the Source Citation(s).
2) Provide a preference setting that allows the Facts tab More column icons to be shown/hidden.
There could be a separate preference for each of the Witness, Media, Note, and Source icon columns, and the More column width would adjust accordingly. If all were hidden the More column would be hidden completely.
Alternatively, the preference could show/hide the entire More column.

Re: Property box icons
At present the width of the more box is set to allow for three icons. If the option 2 to separately enable/disable each type is implemented, it should size the column according to how many are enabled. If none are enabled the column would not be shown. A minimum size would be needed if only one was enabled to ensure "More" wasn't truncated.

As your wording reads, Mike, it isn't explicit that both halves of the proposal must be implemented.

Worth adding to explicitly state that if none are enabled the More column is not shown as that would make Helen and others who would like the column removed happy?
