Option to change behaviour of Ctrl+V shortcut

Post by AdrianBruce » 13 Dec 2022 21:42

Background
If I copy text from certain websites and paste it using Ctrl+V into a note in FH, the success is entirely problematic. The classic cases are FreeBMD and the GRO site BMD indexes.

FreeBMD works pretty much OK, albeit with some extra link words that can easily be removed. Otherwise, the result mimics the FreeBMD index well.

The GRO site BMD indexes produce a mess - 3 cells in a vertical stack that bears no relation to the GRO Site. I assume that the mess is not something that CP can fix but is a constraint arising from the way that the site was coded.

At the point of pasting, because I can never remember which gives the idiotic results, and because my muscle memory says "Ctrl+V" for paste, I will often do that Ctrl+V and then 50% of the time, I need to Undo that step before I do a Right Click and choose Paste Unformatted.

If I could remember to Right Click, then Paste Unformatted, everything would be OK - but I can't.

Analogy
Similar issues occur when pasting into Microsoft Word. Microsoft offers a mitigation for this by giving four options for Pasting (see File / Options / Advanced / Cut, Copy & Paste in MS Word). The first three options refer to pasting within or between Word sessions. The fourth refers to Pasting from Other Programs - I have this option set to "Keep Text only" - the equivalent to Paste Unformatted in FH.

Proposal
It should be possible to set two new options in FH to alter the behaviour of both the Edit / Paste command and the Ctrl+V shortcut. Option 1 should apply to Edit / Paste and Ctrl+V when the characters being pasted in come from outside FH - e.g. from a browser. The default should be the current behaviour of pasting formatted text. The alternative value should be to carry out a Paste Unformatted.

Option 2 should apply to Edit / Paste and Ctrl+V when the characters being pasted in come from inside FH. The default should be the current behaviour. The alternative value should be to carry out a Paste Unformatted.

Option 2 exists to allow unformatted paste from browsers (via option 1) but allow formatted pastes of Rich Text from within FH.

Note that Right Click / Paste and Right Click / Paste Unformatted Text must continue as now - in particular Right Click / Paste must always paste formatted if that's what is on the clipboard.

Personal result
I would set Option 1 (Pasting from outside) to Paste Unformatted, thus taming the GRO indexes in particular.
I would let Option 2 (Pasting from inside FH) default to Paste Formatted.
If I had a website whose formatting was compatible with FH's Rich text, I would use Right Click / Paste (formatted).

That isn't always what happens now, Adrian. If you're in the (well hidden) Plain Text editor, Ctrl+V pastes unformatted (which s what you'd probably expect).

So...
Note that Right Click / Paste and Right Click / Paste Unformatted Text must continue as now - in particular Right Click / Paste must always paste formatted if that's what is on the clipboard.
... becomes ...
Note that Right Click / Paste and Right Click / Paste Unformatted Text in the Rich Text Editor must continue as now - in particular Right Click / Paste must always paste formatted if that's what is on the clipboard.
(Italics to denote the amended text) Does that make sense?

Yes.

I'll lob this onto the Wish List tomorrow, so people can vote on it.
