I see where you're coming from, but I truly hadn't thought of doing it that way!

It just seemed natural to add a fact first, then add the citation to show where I got the information.

On reflection, either way seems as good as the other, except doing it your way, you guarantee not forgetting to add a citation

If still considered worthwhile, the Wish List item Ref 531 Auto Source Citation to support pre-selected Source Record could be slightly adapted to include the Add Citation > New copy selected Source feature requested here.

If that means using auto-citation, then no, not the same thing at all!

The wish is for it to be done from the 'Add Citation' dialogue box, which I already have open! I highlight the source closest to what I want, then click a 'Copy' button to copy its details into the Dialogue box, ready for editing!

NB I don't use Auto-citation, so what you are suggesting would not help.

Using FTM as an example, one can Copy source, then one could either Paste Source or Paste Source as New. This is what the wishlist item is trying to mimic.

Yes please. Your suggested change, as per Para 1 one above would suit me fine.

The 'on reflection' comment was referring to Adrian's practise of creating a new Citation, before adding a fact, which is not the way I work.

One clarification please: Should the Copy include any Media linked via the Media tab of original record?
The New Source Record pane does not display all the Source fields, and the Media tab is one of them, so could easily be overlooked, leaving the wrong Media linked to the new Source record.
There are other minor fields not shown on the Main tab of the Source record Property Box that only appear on the All tab. These include the Data tag and a whole set of subsidiary tags, and also the Last Change Notes.
Perhaps they should also be omitted? So only the fields visible in the New Source Record pane get copied?

Personally, I don't think it is necessary, because being a 'New' source, it would most probably come with new media as well (e.g. Census image), so copying existing media would be a waste of time.

I simply want as many data fields from the selected source, copied into the 'New Source Record' fields, to save unnecessary typing.

I agree the linked Media should not be copied.

But are you familiar with the Data tag subsidiary details and the Last Change Notes?
They do not appear in the New Source Record pane nor the Source record Main tab.
So if they exist in the record being copied from, it will not be obvious to the user that they have been copied to the new record, and in my opinion they are unlikely to be relevant to the new record, but can easily be overlooked by the user.

No, I'm not familiar with either, but suggest neither is copied across, as they are not shown in the source property pane, and user would not be aware they were copied.

In principle, only the data normally visible in the source property box needs to be copied. Copying 'hidden' data is fraught with dangers, as you point out!

Don't forget, we are just trying to speed up the creation of the citation, not automate it completely. Adding media, data and notes would still need to be added, no matter how a source is created, so users shouldn't be put out that they would still need to manually add these after the source is created.
