Modify children view in focus window

Post by Gowermick » 02 Jan 2016 14:44

Currently, the focus window for a family, show just Name, Birth Date and Death Date for children, with no indication of where they were born.

I suggest the view be amended to show Name, Birth Year, Short Place of Birth, Death Year, and Short Place of Death.

This would be useful when searching for the family ( or its individual members) in the Census, as an aid to eliminating wrong results.

This is derived from thread Display Birthplace in Focus Window (13179).

That suggested it would be useful for the Date Format to be customisable, so any of the Format types can be chosen including ABBREViated, and the Place Format to be customisable, so any of the Format types can be chosen including SHORT & MEDIUM, and also NONE so Place can be hidden.

Might also be useful to similarly customise the main Parents/Spouses box's Born and Died fields.

Mike,
I think it a bit over the top to have everything customisable. It would be simple to modify the current code to insert just the year of the date field Date. Likewise with place. The easier it is to implement, the more likely it is to be adopted.

But what about other users who wish to see the full Dates as now?

Yes... I would prefer to have the full date and no birth place rather than just the year and the birth place. If this is going to change then it should be customizable so the user can choose what type of date and place to show (or to suppress the place entirely).

Hello, I am still trying out FH free trial but think I will chose this software after having used FTM for many years and just having tried Roots Magic which I couldn't get on with. So far so good but this is one of the items which I would love to have added, the place of birth in the focus window and if possible place of death. Is there any possibility that this could be added into the programme at some stage?

Mike & BillH,

The reason I suggested showing just birth year, rather than full birthdate in family view, is because:

A) Christening and Burials aside, most documents we search, generally only show year of birth or age, so would not normally be required for searching.

B) If we need the full birth or death date, a quick glance at the individual's property sheet will show this, which can be open alongside family view in any case.

I can think of no advantage being gained, by showing full birth or death dates for children in the family view, rather than just years. Whereas there is an advantage in showing just years, as this would leave more room to show location.

Mike,

I hate to disagree, but I use the full birth date from that list all the time when I am looking updating information in FH. I do not want to lose that. I have been using FH for about 7 years or so and I've never felt the need to have the birth location shown there.

I am not convinced that any Wish List request is worthwhile.
If the Property Box is open along with the Focus Window then a quick click on any person in the family, displays the full Date and Place of any events configured in the Main tab, such as Birth, Baptism, Death & Burial. So a quick glance there provides all the details requested by all contributors to this thread.
Furthermore, if any person in the family is double-clicked they become the Focus which shows Place names already.
Also, it is not clear what Year to display when a Date Range is recorded that spans more than one year.

I am tempted to move this to the Closed Wish List Requests.

I disagree.
When viewing a family on a census return, you see the children's names, ages AND places of birth, which are often different places.

It is easier to see if this is a match to our chosen family at a glance, when the children's place of birth is listed. Ideally, this information needs to be on view in the focus window at all times. The whole purpose of the request was to avoid the need to click each child in turn, a point you seem to have overlooked. It is already there for the parents, why not the children too? There is certainly room enough on the screen.

If no-one votes for it, fair enough it doesn't go forward, but to remove it simply because you don't see the point, seems rather heavy handed on your part. You can chose not to vote for it if you wish, but the final choice should be down to all the users, not a single user like me or you!

Has your position changed regarding the reduction of the Date to just the Year?
Earlier you wanted that "to leave more room to show location", whereas now you say "there is certainly room enough on the screen".

It was the change to the Date that others did not like, and would require a customisation option, as I don't think your suggestion of "a quick glance at the individual's property sheet will show this" is acceptable.

If the request is simply to add the Place to the full Date then that will be fine.

My ultimate aim is to have place of birth as well as date, shown for children in the family view. If that can be achieved without mucking around with the date, all fine and dandy. However if showing full date would compromise showing the place, then I'd rather have just year shown and place of birth, than just full date without the place.
Does that make sense?

I just want to reiterate what I said earlier. I do not want to lose the full date here. If adding the place means changing the date from full date to just the year, I would be against this change. If there is an option to show either the full date or the year, then it would be fine.

Wish List item Ref 544 Place details for Children in Focus Window has been added.
I hope that its wording is to everyone's liking.

Good compromise Mike. Should satisfy both sides with the request for a preference option.
