Installed V3 on new Vista system. Worked OK for 3 to 4 months, now get error message 'Family Historian has stopped working'

Has anyone else had this experience? If so, how did you fix it? (Same problem with Firefox - haven't been able to solve that either!)

This sounds as if it's more likely to be a Windows problem, if Firefox has also 'broken'

A quick google suggests there should be a button to click for more information which might give more information on the reason for the problem.

Have you tried going back to a system restore point prior to the problem starting?

Did you recently download the latest Java VM, this seems to have caused problems with several programs, like registry mechanic, which I can think of no good reason that it should have stopped.

I have used FH v.3 successfully on Vista for several months. I agree with Jane that it is most likely a widows problem rather than FH., but cannot offer a solution.

It probably is either a Windows or Norton problem: have had a computer doctor in today and many of the problems on my XP machine were down to Norton.

His suggestion was to uninstall then re-install the software but thought I'd ask in case someone had something else to suggest first.

Going backwards is not an option: been naughty and did not back-up before installing recent programs and files.

I think vista automatically sets system restore points so it might be worth trying one of them.

I used to use Norton, but gave up on it a few years ago, as it seemed to cause more problems than it solved

Jane I'm so glad that you said this about Norton as I have found the same. Even when I uninstalled it there were still lots of files to do with Norton on my PC that I struggled to get rid of. The worst thing is that it was also preloaded onto my new laptop and now I have to uninstall Norton on that too!

The following is a direct copy of an article on the Calico pie website [ http://www.family-historian.co.uk/suppo ... ll_FAQ.htm]
I only found this after trying restores, program uninstalls and various other 'guesses' at the cause. I hope it prevents other people wasting too much time on this issue.

The installation works but Family Historian won't run.

This can occur if DEP ('Data Execution Prevention') is enabled for all programs on your PC. In that case, you can solve the problem by simply adding Family Historian to the list of programs for which DEP is not enabled. To do this, open 'System' within the Control Panel, and click on the Advanced tab. Click on 'Settings' in the Performance area and choose the 'Data Execution Prevention' tab. If 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select' is selected, click the Add button and locate the Family Historian executable (usually located at 'c:program filesfamily historianprogramfh.exe'). Save the changed settings.
