Issue downloading trial

Post by Starry » 17 Feb 2009 17:25

I thought I'd give the free trial a go, after hearing some good reports. However, my McAfee virus checker popped up a warning while doing the install - detailed below.
Trojan Quarantined
You can restore quarantined files from the Restore pane in SecurityCenter.

About this Trojan
Detected: Generic!Artemis (Trojan)
Quarantined From: C:Program FilesFamily HistorianProgramis-JTIB7.tmp

Trojans appear as legitimate programs but can damage valuable files, disrupt performance, and allow unauthorized access to your computer.
Is there a problem with this installation? Is it safe to use the program?
Thanks.

Issue downloading trial

A few years ago McAfee started reporting my Gedcom Census app as having a virus in it. After a few days McAfee was fixed but not until a number of worried users contacted me. They didn't even acknowledge the email I sent them about it. In my opinion they are a joke of a company and I hear almost nothing but bad things about their anti-virus.

This has been reported to us, and we in turn have reported it to McAfee as a false positive.  Unfortunately, although they do not advertise the fact, it is quite common for anti-virus programs to make incorrect reports like this. Hopefully McAfee will fix the problem soon.

If the subject interests you, try typing 'McAfee false positives' into Google - there's plenty of stuff on it.  The problem is by no means limited to McAfee, of course.

Hi Starry
The way that virus checkers work is to look for the 'signature' of the virus, by comparing sections of code with known sections of code from viruses, stored in a database. This means that it is possible for any program to contain the same code fragments as a virus (because most programs are compiled and they create standard code).
To be certain, delete the download, use your virus-checker to scan your whole computer (to make sure that you don't already have a virus), when your machine is checked out re-download the trial version.
I'm using the trial version, purchased on-line after a satisfactory test, and have had no problems. Used in conjunction with Nick's Gedcom Census it is the very best piece of Software on the market.

Regards
Rodders
(ps - I don't work for Calico Pie either :) )

I had the same problem and reported it to Simon who is trying to sort it out with McAfee but it IS a false positive.

The 'workaround' I used was:
1. download the FH installation file
2. disable McAfee
3. Install FH3
4. enable McAfee and run scan on your C drive 'Program Files' folder. McAfee quarantined the following 2 files is-86MGL.tmp and is-LMNVL.tmp listing them as Trojans: 'GENERIC!ARTEMIS'
5. delete the temp files which are quarantined and which were presumably created during the installation but not deleted.

This has worked fine for me. I have entered 600 individuals into my software; multiply that figure by the amount of data and I can be fairly certain that deletion of these files will have no adverse impact. Mind you they shouldn't if they are only temp files left-over from the installation
