I am trying to publish a family history. The printers I have contacted require everything presented in .pdf files, which I don't have as I'm still in V3.
Adobe Photoshop images are not suitable as the dpi is too low for printing, they prefer images at 300 dpi.

He has suggested Tiff as a possible alternative, but the dpi would have to be 300 again. I have just tried to save a diagram in TIFF, and a message comes up saying that 'no application is registered as the default application for files of this type, and therefore cannot be opened'.

Can anyone explain why this is happening, and any advice on images for publication purposes?

If you want to output to PDF which I would recommend, just download one of the free PDF printing programs from the list in the Knowledge base http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... f_creators



If you want to be able to read TIF files, then you will need to install a Graphics package which supports them such as IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com/

Unless you need a lots of copies you will probably be better going down the self publish route such as Blurb, Lulu or similar (they both require PDF, or to use their own program, but you can print just a single copy).

I use Blurb for my 'holiday books' as I only need one or two copies and they are very nice.

I am working in FH3 & have diagrams & charts which I need to save as PDFs. As you know, there is no option to save diagrams as PDFs in FH3 in the Save As Options. If I download PDF software as you suggest, like Nova PDF printer 7 onto my computer, will I then get the option to save as PDF in FH3? ie will it support a Gedcom file? or will some other manoevre be necessary in order to access the PDF file facility from FH3?

As it says on the page that Jane linked to about PDF Creators whichever you choose to install will create a 'pretend' (virtual) printer on your computer. It will appear in the list of printers in any software you have on your computer. Any program which has the facility to print will be able to print to it because it is really fooling the software into thinking it is a real printer. So all you need to do is to print your charts or reports in Family Historian to this PDF printer and it will then be saved as a PDF file. As it isn't a real printer you will be able to choose very large page sizes so that your diagrams will fit on one page. Or you'll be able to print it small but as it is a PDF you'll be able to zoom in to see the detail.

You might as well use a free one from the list, or just buy Family Historian 4 as the upgrade is cheaper (or about the same price) as NovaPDF 7, most have very similar options.

I am using the Nova PDF software & it's working great. Funnily enough we have FH4 on a laptop, & couldn't get it to work properly at all with PDF output, only intermittently, as if there is a technical problem with it.

So, yea, paid out for something we already have, but after a couple of days of hair-tearing it seemed cheap at the price!

If you are using V4.0 on an x64 laptop install the 4.1 upgrade, it fixes quite a few problems with PDFs as V4 has Nova 6 and V4.1 has Nova 7.
