* FH Icons Folder

Hi All,

I wish to download some icons from the FHUG site to the FH Icons Folder but I've been unable to locate the Icons Folder on my PC.  I'm running XP and FH 3.1

My FH Folder is in C:Program FilesFamily Historian with sub-folders - Diagrams, Fact Sets, Flags, Program, Queries, Reports, Text Schemes and Web but no Icons sub-folder.

I'd understood from Jane's Flags and Icons Tutorial that there should be an FH Icons Folder containing a set of icons.  Would some kind sole point me in the right direction or should I merely create the sub-folder myself?

The first thing you need to do/check is that Window's hidden folders and files setting is cleared. By default Window keeps certain folders hidden from view and for some reason FH uses these hidden folders to keep user created settings which means that users can't easily find them!

In Explorer select Tools->Folder Options then click the View tab. Scroll through the many options till you find the hidden files and folders setting and make sure it's set to 'show'. Now navigate through the folder hierarchy to get to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersCalico PieFamily HistorianIcons.

However you can place your icons anywhere as you can choose the folder to select icons from when changing the conditions for boxes. One place might in the project's folder heirarchy which will ensure that your icons are backed up when you backup your project.

Hello Jon,

I adopted your suggestion and have put icons into a sub-folder within my project folder which also contains several sub-folders of multimedia and the GEDCOM file. This is on my PC running XP.

I've finally got round to linking icons (BMD + Census from FHUG) to flags and have hit an issue when copying the GEDCOM file to my laptop which has the identical project folder and sub-folders but is running VISTA.

Whilst the icons appear in diagrams on the PC they do not appear in diagrams on the laptop.  The flags are definitely in the GEDCOM file on the laptop but there is no longer a link to the icons.

Is this  likely to be a filepath issue and, if so, can you advise on a solution?  Would the simplest answer be to include the BMD and Census icons in Calico Pie's icon folder on both the PC and laptop?

I believe that for the default diagrams ('Ancestors', 'Descendants', 'Ancestors & Descendants', 'All Relatives', and 'Everyone') the definitions of diagram box conditions (such as record flags) and associated features (such as icons) are stored in the Windows Registry rather than in any of FH's folders/files.  As such it would be tricky to transport them from one PC to another, even if both XP or both Vista.  I think you will have to manually define the box conditions and features on the Vista PC for the default diagrams.

If you save a default diagram on your XP machine as a Custom Diagram Type and copy that Custom Diagram to your Vista machine, it should have the same box conditions and features.

I hope I've got this right, but if not I'm sure Jane will put us all right.

Peter is correct, What you can do though is save your current scheme as a custom one and use the export / import to copy it to the laptop.

Then either select the custom diagram from the view menu, or use the custom option once and then tick the default box on diagram options to 'lock' the custom one into the default on the laptop.

I would recommend always keeping a custom version of your standard diagrams, as new versions of FH tend to over-write the standard ones, if new features are added. Custom ones also survive a re-install and are easier to backup and restore.

This all seemed staightforward until I gave it a go. I opened up 3 different diagrams and saved each separately using File/Save Diagram As/Custom Diagram Type and gave each a different name. There was no option to save the diagram into a separate folder so I assume each diagram has been saved in the Windows Registry?

When I open FH and go into View/Custom Diagrams each of the diagram names are greyed out and can't be opened. If I click on any individual (eg Francis Carlin unrelated to Custom Diagrams) in the Records window and open his descendents diagram the Custom Diagrams are no longer greyed out. Then, clicking on a Custom Diagram (eg Suzi Tubb's Tree) merely changes the title of the existing diagram from the 'Descendents of Francis Carlin' to 'Suzi Tubbs' Tree - Francis Carlin' with the contentof the Carlin diagram remaining unchanged.

I guess that I have done something wrong. Can you help please.

Custom Diagrams will have been saved to the folder C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianDiagramsCustom.

You need to select (i.e. click on) an Individual or a Family before trying to select a diagram, whether default, Standard, or Custom.

When you save a Diagram as a Custom Diagram Type, it is only the format of the diagram that is saved (including box conditions & features, etc.) not the content.  If you want to save a diagram with its current content, you need to save it as a Family Historian Chart....  Such Charts are saved in the Charts subfolder in your Project folder structure (because they are specific to a particular project): C:Documents and Settings{username}My DocumentsFamily Historian Projects{project}{project}.fh_dataCharts.  They are accessed via the View menu Saved Charts....

I hope this has helped to make this admittedly somewhat confusing area a little clearer.
