* Editing a family tree CD

Hi,

Please could anyone please tell me where I am going wrong when I edit a page  created using the Make a Family Tree CD section.

When I click on file then edit using microsoft word I can edit the text etc. and then save the page but then the colours that I have selected for the links  don't  come up when I re-start the program. Is there anywhere on the forum which details what to do and how to make a CD in detail?

Hi Roy,

I also found MS Word tends to make a hash of things when editing files not built with it. Have you tried Notepad or a Freebie webpage design program. For small projects I use good old MS Frontpage Express, which can still be found on the net.

I use Word to edit HTML files, but I've found since Office version 2007 I have to Save As 'Web Page Filtered' rather than the default so it (apparently) removes Word specific extensions. Irritating since the whole point of using HTML is to produce a document that's not Word specific.

When you state 'when I re-start the program' are you talking about restarting Family Historian? If so, do you mean that you loose the colours when you re-create the CD? When FH creates a website or CD it deletes everything in the directory so all changes will be lost.

No, I mean when I restart the preview cd program within the wizard.

Just to clarify, so what you are doing is creating a CD with File->Make a Family Tree CD, going through the process until the end when you click the Finish button, where upon FH creates the website and you are then prompted to Preview CD, Learn About the Next Step: Burning CDs, Return to CD Creation Wizard, or to Close Wizard.

Do you then preview the CD, then edit one the HTML files in Word, followed by clicking Preview CD again? Is at this point when previewing the CD again that you loose your colour settings? If, so then you shouldn't be losing your settings since the files aren't regenerated.

However if you close the wizard and re-start it will re-create all the files from scratch. FH prompts you about deleting all the files when you click Finish and there are files already in the directory you're using for the CD.

Yes, the process I go through is this - I create a CD with File->Make a Family Tree CD, going through the process until the end when I click the Finish button, where upon FH creates the website and I am are then prompted to Preview CD,
I preview the CD, then edit one the HTML files in Word, save it then close down the preview.  I then click Preview CD again. It is  at this point when previewing the CD again that I lose my colour settings.

I have downloaded a website development program called Trellian Web Page which I am trying to learn but it isn't as easy as the Family Historian program

Just a thought but are you using CD that can only be written to once? That would explain why you can't save the changes.

If that is the case then perhaps you should save the web site to your hard disk, then edit it and only write it to CD when you have made all the changes you want.

Hi Roy,
Rather than using the 'Preview CD', have you just tried using Internet Explorer (or your chosen web browser) to directly access the web page from the 'CD' ? It is also possible that when you edit the web page it is being saved back to a different location to the actual 'CD', so the preview CD is not picking up the amended version.
I would also strongly recommend that you don't use Word to edit web pages, it has a habit of adding loads of bespoke code that really isn't needed on a web page which makes the file a lot bigger than it needs to be.

Yes, as just mentioned, don't use Word to edit HTML coding, it is terrible at it. Can't recommend to you what to use, as I do all the hard coding using a text editor myself.
