Moving FH and display of flag icons on diagrams

Post by peter5643 » 17 Oct 2008 10:18

I am in the process of moving FH (Version 3.1.2) to another pc also Windows XP.

My installation uses the default folders for FH EXCEPT my gedcom files and backups and all my images, icons, etc which link to FH are in subfolders ie c:Geneologysubfolders.

I have read the Move Settings How to and installed FH on the new pc with this procedure.

Everything works fine EXCEPT I use flags and icons throughout my diagrams to indicate Censuses, BMD, IGI,etc. What has happened is that I have transferred the icons and the flags but have lost the link between the two and the flags do not display on the diagram anymore. I have something like 50 flags linked to icons.

Have I missed something that I should transfer ?

Yep, The connection between icons and flags is stored in the registry. This is different to some settings which are stored in the Gedcom, and yet other settings which are stored in hidden directories. Altogether it doesn't make it easy for a user to transfer their research from one computer to another. I kind of think that the restriction in the license to only use FH on two computers is a bit generous when its so hard to transfer all it's settings. :-)
  • Anyway, open up RegEdit by clicking the Windows Start button on your original computer, and then 'Run...'. Type in RegEdit and press OK.
  • In RegEdit, double click HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then software, then Calico Pie.
  • Now select Family Historian and then select Export from the File menu. Choose a filename and ensure that the 'selected branch' option in the bottom of the dialog is enabled.
  • Transfer this file to your new PC, start RegEdit, and select Import from the File menu.
Since this will overwrite all the settings for FH on your new computer, make sure you know what you've changed. Alternatively, you can export and import individual branches within FH's registry settings.

The other option, is simply to save your current diagrams, as a custom diagram type (this is a good idea anyway as it creates a backup of your configs) and export them from your main system and import them to your other computer.

You can then display your custom digram, go to the boxes tab and tick the default option to set your flags.

Thanks Jon and Jane for your replies. I thought the missing link data might be in the registry...Grrrrr!!!.

Basically what I am trying to create is a system with FH on a PC (Master ) and a copy on my laptop for library visits etc. Obviously I would not use FH simultaneously on the two machines so assume I am not breaking any license terms. What I am seeing now is that it is going to be awkward to synchronise the PC and laptop in step with one another.

I will try your suggestions and report back. Thanks again for help.

I used the procedure that you suggested Jane and it worked fine. Your method Jon of using RegEdit would I am sure have done the trick but I am always a bit reluctant to edit the registry so I avoided this course of action.

Actual the problem of flags and icons, once they are set up on the PC and laptop, is unlikely to be an issue. I have about 50 flags and icons and am unlikely to add to the list.

What I am looking at is to synchronise the PC and laptop using SyncBackPro 5. So far my trials using this software seems to be working fine for both backing up my FH and synchronising PC and laptop.

Thanks for help !!!

Glad it's going well. I really like syncback and use it all the time to keep my main system and my NAS backup and laptop in sync.

Moving FH and display of flag icons on diagrams

Another twist to this thread !!!!.

In the context of the above I have ALSO decided to reorganise my file structures BEFORE I transfer to my laptop so my flag icons are now in a diffrent path to where they were before although in the same named folder ie Icons.

I have not had a problem re-establishing the links to all my other external files which I have redirected(ie Source and Multimedia)usings Tools>Working with External File Links but my links to my flag icons are no longer there. I rather expected this to happen.

Is there anyway I can simply re-establish the flag/icon links on my PC before transfer to laptop without having to do it manually for 50 odd links ? I have a feeling there isn't

When you export the diagram format to a file, the path to the icons are in the file. If you put the icons on the icons folder they will be linked simply as the file name, I think you will find the path in there as well if you store them else where. So you might be able to edit the diagram file to fix the links.

Moving FH and display of flag icons on diagrams

As suggested I exported the diagram file and did the edit. As I had nearly 50 icons there were the same number of path entries in the file to edit.

Using Wordpad and 'Find and Replace All' saved alot of work updating the paths.

The diagram was loaded and the default set and hey presto it worked...Thanks Jane for your help.
