* [Wish List Item 632] Change the actions of the go-back / history list

For Wish List Requests that have either (a) been progressed to the Wish List; or (b) been classified as duplicates, or as redundant because the requirement is already satisfied within FH and/or plugins; or (c) closed because it wasn't possible to arrive at a clear specification of the request within 15 months of it being raised.

[Wish List Item 632] Change the actions of the go-back / history list

Post by Gowermick »

FH keeps a track of records visited via the history or go-back list, activated by the back/forward arrows at top of property box.

If a record is deleted, this list is cleared by design.

May I propose that this list is retained throughout a session, and not cleared when a record is deleted.

Does anyone have any opinions on this or can I move it straight to the Wish List?

What is the desired effect of moving back through history and coming across a record that has been deleted?
  • Just skip to next (existing) record in the history
  • display a note that "this record has been deleted"
  • display a note that "this record has been deleted" and offer to try to recover it?

David,
Bearing in mind the list is deleted at the end of a session, I’d go with your option 1.

My vote would be to just silently skip.

Actually is this more of a bug than a wish list item?

Why should deleting a record cause the loss of the history list?

Or am I not understanding something?

David,
It is only a bug if it shouldn’t happen. However CP states this happens by design therefore not a bug :D

Wish list Request

Retention of History on deletion of a Record

Requirement

Deleting a record should not result in the deletion of the history list, just the removal of the deleted record's appearances in the list.

Benefits

The history list continues to function after the deletion of a record.

Notes
  1. The possibility of keeping a deleted record in the list (as "deleted") and possibly offering to try and recover it was thought unnecessary.
  2. If a deleted record is subsequently recovered (via the undo), it should be placed back in the history list once as the most recent item.

Instead of talking about deletion and reinstatement of items in the list just request that the history sequence should be preserved and any deleted items handled sensibly.

Ideally, Undo for deleted items should reinstate the original history sequence.

Bear in mind that more than just records are held in the history sequence.
e.g. Selected items on Property Box Facts, Notes and Media tabs are also remembered in the history and such items could be deleted and restored.
i.e. The history sequence could be Individual Notes tab with 3rd note selected > Source Media tab with 2nd media selected > Family Facts tab with Marriage event selected.

But Mike L in his original request had limited the request to "Records" and the "back/forward arrows at top of property box"

If a record is deleted, this list is cleared by design.

May I propose that this list is retained throughout a session, and not cleared when a record is deleted.
That makes the specification of the Requirement easier - even if it may be more complex for CP!

I disagree. He did not limit the request to deleted records, but gave that as an example.
He said: "May I propose that this list is retained throughout a session" and that is the simplest requirement.
The Subject line does not mention records.
I have just discovered that if a custom tab is in the history list and that tab is disabled then stepping through the history list will crash FH V7. I realise that such a crash should be reported to CP, but who knows what other issues may arise.

So may I propose that the history list is retained throughout a session under all circumstances including deletion of records, custom tabs, etc.

Work started on this over a year ago to flesh out the text to put it on the list, but stalled, so I'm putting the item on hold until activity can be restarted.

Re: On hold until 22 Dec 2024: Change the actions of the go-back / history list

I suggest:

Problem:
Each Property Box has Go Back and Go Forward white arrow buttons in the toolbar to traverse a history list.
Currently, if an item in the history list is deleted either the whole history list is purged or the buttons malfunction.

Proposal:
The Property Box Go Back and Go Forward buttons should continue to traverse the history list rationally if an item in the list is deleted.

For example, deleted items in the history list should be skipped but the rest of the list retained.

I don't use the Back / Forward functionality very often but on those occasions that I do, I would expect it to operate as Mike T has specified - removal of an item should not result in the whole 'history' list disappearing.
