Plugin - 'List all Citations etc'

Post by Robert129 » 30 Mar 2012 15:13

I read on the FHUsers Digest of a member having problems with the plugin 'List all citations for a selected source'.

I too have a problem in that it starts to run but never gets anywhere and also the box with the green bar running across it does not seem to expand to the correct depth as (and I am assuming) that the word 'Cancel' at the bottom of the box does not appear in full. I can only see the top of the letters.

I have tried it on the Sample project and it works fine as it does on several other Projects I have.

Also how difficult would it be to expand it so that the 'Note' field is included?

Any suggestions?
Robert

I have been looking at the issue with Ed, but the problem is it works fine even on his database on my machine, which makes it difficult to find the cause.

Please can you run a validate over your gedcom just in case.

Just run a validate and 'No errors found'.

I know it is not the main issue, but I had the same problem with the Cancel button being partly hidden off the bottom of the Progress window.

I revised the Progress Bar (code snippit) in January to fix that button problem, and also allow the Maximum and Step values be user definable.

Since original posting I have found that if you leave it running nothing happens except that it forces FH to 'Stop Responding' and it closes down. When you re-open FH it has also 'lost' what was the default project.
I have also uninstalled FH v5 and re-installed from v4 CD upgrade with key and then the v5 upgrade with key.
Would I have needed to go back to the original v3 CD that started me on FH with all the ancilliary upgrades or not?

The plugin does not update the settings as all, so I am not sure why the default project disappears.

Is there any chance you could run the plugin from the Edit option and when it appears to stop see if you can Stop it from the editor.

I have updated the plugin please could you try this one.

It now outputs how far it has got so hopefully I can work out why it's not working for certain people.

If FH 'Stops Responding' and has to be stopped, and if the Default Startup Project had been changed, then the change usually does not get saved to the Registry.
This affects some other setting changes too, but cannot remember for sure which ones.

Jane
Deleted old Plugin and installed the new one.

As you suggested ran from Edit option and the following happened.
1) Progress box opened fully so I could see progress bar and cancel button.
2) At top started with INDIviduals and count started and went through all of the 41074 individulas in my project. This took 73 minutes. After that it started to go through FAMilies of which there are 11454. I pressed 'Cancel' and got the message that FH had stopped working.
I assume that it shouldn't take this long?
Your suggestions for the next step please.

As a post script the scenario above was run on a source that has 15,182 Citations. Ran it on a Source with 1 citation and it took about 1 minute.

I suspect 15,000 citations are pushing the memory to it's limits as to output the Query list I have to build tables for each column.

I can't really think how to improve that, but I will look to see if I can do anything to work out what the Cancel button problem is.

Could you try the big one again, and monitor the memory usage on the Windows Task Manager.

just run it. Started at 19:57 and finished INDI at 20:10. Then finished FAM at 20:12.
CPU usage throughout was between 50 & 52% and Memory was between 1.75mb at start to 1.56 at finish.
Interestingly though when it had finished running there was no result i.e. a Result Quey but the Plugin box became 'greyed out' and on the top bar/line it said Plugins (Not responding) and the very top line of FH said 'All relatives Smith family.ged - Family Historian Project - (Records) (Not Responding).
When I closed the Plugin box (Red cross top right) an error message came up whish saig FH has stopped working with 2 options:-

Close the program
or
wait for the program to respond.

Robert would you be prepared to send me the gedcom you are having the problem with, so I can try and see if there is a way I can fix the issue?

It probably won't be for a couple of weeks as I am teaching a residential 4 day Family History course next week and don't expect much spare time as it runs from 9:30am to 9:30pm each day.

Yes I can do that. Is there a specific e-mail address that I should use?

In passing I also tried the UDF plugin and again I only get half the progress window. Haven't tried all the rest so not sure if it applies to all. I do however like the look of the progress box you created for 'List Source citations..' so perhaps when time permits this could be the default for all Plugins.

No rush as I realise how busy you are with courses and the numerous questions with v%.

janetaubman at gmail.com will be fine.

When I get time I'll work through and use the new progress bar for the others, but just at the moment . . .

I have revised the List All Citations again, to update the progress bar less often and to warn that sources with very large numbers of citations will take some time to display AFTER the search has completed (it's where the data is passed back to FH for display which seems to take the time).

Ed Thomas has post a message on the FH User Mailing list suggesting that List all Citations for a Source has a problem with Custom Facts that are NOT defined in a Fact Set.

The 13 May 2012 message topic is [FHU] Plugin Problem (update: problem identified and solved) but is not yet indexed.
