Map Life Facts V1.1 feedback request

Post by tatewise » 20 Dec 2011 18:46

Could I ask Beta Testers to run my Map Life Facts V1.1 plugin in order to get feedback on which PC configurations exhibit problems, and which don't.
You do not have to actually create any maps, just download, install & run the plugin, close any messages it produces, and close the plugin itself.
For details of how the plugin operates, either click its Help & Advice button, or see the Knowledge Base at
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... life_facts

Please report your Windows OS and Service Pack and what Firewall software you use, together with how the plugin ran and any problems that arose.

This ran OK - no error messages, no problems that I'm aware of. Using Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit, McAfee firewall.

My own testing is OK on:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 & Windows Firewall
Windows Vista Home Premuim 32-bit SP2 & Windows Firewall
Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3 & Windows Firewall
Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3 & Comodo Firewall
On this last PC Comodo raises warnings about Map Life Facts.hta changing Internet Settings, but when all Allowed, then runs OK thereafter.

As you already are aware, I get a script error using Vista Home Premium (32-bit) SP1 with Comodo Firewall.

I have tried Map Life Facts V1.1 on both Windows XP and 7, both Home editions, 32 bit, fully updated and with Windows Firewall and both have performed OK except that I can make FH crash on both versions.

Having loaded Map Life Facts I have then gone to Help. If I close Help using the Close Window box at bottom right there is no problem. If, however, I close it by clicking on the X box at the top right side then I get an error message and FH closes. In XP I am offered the chance to send a report to Microsoft. In 7 I get 'Family Historian has stopped working'

Hi Mike.
No Problems on Win XP 32bit SP3, Windows Firewall NAV 2012.

However,
If you choose geocode all unmapped, and then realise that it will take a long time, there is no way to stop the plugin running. Clicking x on either of the boxes, just closes the boxes (and no way to get them back), the plugin carries on running.

So a cancel buton would be nice.
Or, a warning that this process will take xx minutes, do you wish to continue. ( I hadn't spotted the line showing time estimation)

Appears to work well though

Oops! Yes, I'm afraid I can reproduce the crash described by TonyF above (Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3 & Windows Firewall). After clicking on the top-right 'X' on the Help & Advice window, there was about a second of hour-glass, and then FH disappeared, leaving only the Map Life Facts map window.

Thanks for your feedback.
The problem with closing Help & Advice window using X will be fixed in next release.
There will be a Halt Geocode All button in next release to halt Geocode All Entries process.

Hi Mike,
I have tried to reproduce the crash on W7 pro 64bit windows firewall, but everything ran oK.
I also have Win XP 32bit SP3 windows firewall, and I can crash it on that machine.
I also choose geocode all and left it running (2496 to be done 46 mins).
On returning an hour later the plugin appeared to have completed and closed OK.
However, when I ran it again, it was still showing 2496 not done. (And wierdly, when run next day on my XP machine, showed 2499 to be done)(My project folder is on dropbox)

Just installed Beta 4, Can still Crash FH by closing the Help and advice window with the X, on Win XP 32bit SP3.
Everything closes except the map window.
All is OK if you use the close button at the bottom.
I will retest W7 64bit sp1 tonight.

PLEASE NOTE
By fixed in next release I meant fixed in next release of Plugin not FH!

With Jane's excellent help and new features added to FH 5.0.0.3 all the problems above and possibly a few others hope to be fixed in the next Plugin release, but will not be until after Christmas.
