I think Simon is trying to trap these, by trimming numbers on the end, I tried Opening on IE9 and it was fine for me.
If you have had the problem could you confirm the exact file name which was installed, so he can trim any 'extras' the browser adds when they are installed.

The problem appears to occur with every repeated Plugin Download using Open while the browser remains open.
I get the problem using Windows 7 SP1 with Firefox 3.6.25 using Open.
The problem does NOT occur if I use Save.
The problem does NOT occur for me with IE9.
If I close Firefox between each Download then the problem does NOT arise.
The suffix added to the file name is always a hyphen (-) followed by a digit (1-9) which may become more digits if repeated enough!
e.g.
-1
-2
-3
et seq...

Using Chrome, when a file is downloaded to a folder which already contains a file with the same name, ' (1)' is added before the final dot, so that xxx.fh_lua becomes xxx (1).fh_lua and the number in parentheses is incremented for each subsequent duplicate.
This sort of thing has also always happened when downloading Custom Queries from FHUG. One solution could be to delete the file from its initial location on the user's PC after the Plugin or Query has been installed. Of course this would be defeated by anyone downloading direct to e.g. (XP) C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily Historian 5.0 BetaPlugins.

I get the problem using both IE9 and Firefox 9.0.1.
It only happens if I OPEN.
I get the same results as Mike, -1, -2, -3, etc. So, for example, one of the files downloaded was:
Map Life Facts-1.fh_lua
Bill
