Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings

Mike,

I was just wondering if it might be possible in a future version to have an option to support multiple backup folders. Each folder could have the date appended to the end of the name. For example

Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings
Family Historian 2013-03-01
Family Historian 2013-07-11
etc.

I'm doing this manually today, but if it was automatic, that would be ideal.

Thank you Bill, I will investigate that idea for the next version.

A WiP Version 1.8 is available at Backup And Restore Family Historian Settings.

See the notes there regarding the use of dated sub-folders for multiple backups.

I am not entirely happy that this GUI is sufficiently intuitive, so your feedback is welcome.
It is actually quite a tricky concept to manage, and yet still retain the original GUI style.

Mike,

I finally got a chance to test this out. It works great.

I think it is pretty intuitive. I didn't have any problems. The only thing that might be a little confusing is that if you select to not use dated sub-folders, then the chosen folder is used for backups and restores and if you do chose to use them then the chosen folder is only used for restores. Your description on the page with the download link described this well enough for me to understand. I'm sure you were planning on updating the help in the plugin to contain this kind of explanation as well. I think that should do the trick.

I suppose you could separate the options a bit if you thought that would be more intuitive. For non dated sub-folders you could have an option 'choose folder for backup and restore'. For dated sub-folders you could have an option 'choose folder for restore'.

Thanks!

Bill

I am relieved you found the GUI intuitive, but it is a bit subtle, and yes the Help & Advice will get updated.

With Use Dated Sub-folders ticked, the Choose Backup Folder has several modes:

Yes, it always chooses the Restore folder, but it also impacts the Backup folder.

If this chosen folder path ends with a folder formatted as FH Settings yyyy-mm-dd, then the parent folder is used to hold dated sub-folders for Backup.

Otherwise, this chosen folder path in full is used to hold dated sub-folders for Backup.

Then, once a Backup is invoked, this Backup folder automatically becomes the Restore folder.

Mike,

I hadn't realized this subtlety about the backup folder. I think this explanation you gave should be included in the help. It was very clear.

The latest Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings V1.8 is now available from the Plugin Store, with updated Help & Advice in the Knowledge Base.

Mike,

The new version in the store looks great. The help is very clear on the new option. Thanks for putting this in for me.

I noticed a couple things. When I installed version 1.8 it didn't replace version 1.7. Also, I ran the Check Installed Plugins Against the Store plugin and it says that version 1.8 isn't in the store although that is where I got it (from your link).

Thanks,

Bill

That is odd, because I have just repeated the update process by regressing to V1.7 and updating to V1.8 using Check Installed Plugins Against the Store.
It all worked as expected.

Is it possible that your V1.7 did NOT have EXACTLY the same filename as V1.8 ?
e.g.
Your WiP V1.8 would have the name backup_and_restore_family_historian_settings.

Mike,

Hmmm... I don't know what is going on.  After clicking on the link in your message above and installing the new version, I had three entries in my Plugins list.  They were Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings, Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings, and backup_and_restore_family_historian_settings.  One of the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings was version 1.7 and one was version 1.8.

I have since deleted version 1.7 and the wip version so I only have version 1.8 of Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings.

Here is what the Plugins list now shows:

Image

When I run Check Installed Plugins Against the Store this is what it shows:

Image

I looked in my download folder and I saw that there were two files called Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings.fh_lua and Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings (1).fh_lua. This hasn't happened in a long time because I download the files and then run them on my computer and overlay the previous versions. So... I deleted the file without the (1) at the end (version 1.7). I renamed the file with the (1) at the end (version 1.8) so that there was no (1) at the end. I installed it and reran the plugin to check the store and it still says version 1.8 isn't in the store.

Thanks,

Bill

Mike,

I went in to Tools > Plugins and deleted all occurrences of Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings and also went into my downloads folder and deleted all files related to any version of the plugin. Then I downloaded the plugin from the store and installed it. I ran Check Installed Plugins Against the Store again and now all looks well.

It must have had something to do with the fact that the first time I installed version 1.8 the file name had the (1) at the end. Even when I reinstalled from a file that didn't have the (1) at the end, it still didn't work. Cleaning out everything and starting over did the trick.

Thanks,

Bill

I am almost certain that when you deleted the (1) from the end of the filename, you unfortunately left behind the space between ... Settings and (1).
This trailing space is treated as significant by the FH Plugin installer and is retained in the Plugin name.

When you installed this Plugin, FH would NOT have warned: There is already a Plugin with this name. The existing Plugin will be replaced., because the existing V1.7 Plugin did not have the trailing space.

The trailing space also prevents the Plugin from being matched with V1.8 in the Plugin Store, and explains why there appear to be two Plugins with the 'same' name.

I have been able to recreate exactly this scenario.

Mike,

That probably explains it. All is well now.
