Update of Plugins for V7

Post by jbtapscott » 05 Jan 2021 12:49

I fully understand and appreciate that updating of plugins will take time but is there a list anywhere of plugins that will not (or may not) be updated?.

I used Helen's "Research Planner" in V6 and, although there is new research functionality in V7, I am reluctant to spend too much time investigating it when I know that Research Planner met my requirements, but if it is not being updated then I will have to consider how to document my research (e.g. new Research functionality vs some other methodology). I am sure there must be user's of this and other plugins who don't know whether to "wait and see", or whether to start looking at other options to meet their requirements.

Re Research Planner, the plugin store says:
Note for FH7 users: Research Planner will not be updated to work with FH7, as there are now built in features that replace it. I intend to write a new plugin to carry out a once-off migration of existing research tasks to use the new features.
If there are features you think can not be replaced by V7, please let me know. Updating it wouldn't be a gigantic task, but I didn't think it would be needed.

Just when I get around to the new plugin is anyone's guess (I have health problems at present) but I need to write it to move my own research planning to the new facilities. I will also at some point (with the authors permission) update Add Source from Template.

If anyone's interested in Multifact the plugin store says:
Note to FH7 users: Multifact will NOT be upgraded to work with FH7.

I clearly need to go through my Plugins that I don't intend to update for FH V7 and add similar advice.

For the two Plugins mentioned by Helen, the user must open the Plugin page and scroll down to the Download... button to see the "Note for FH7 users:" but it does not stand out and could easily be overlooked.
Maybe it needs to be highlighted in some way that Authors could agree on, like:-

Note for FH7 users: This plugin will not be updated to work with FH7...
or
Note for FH7 users: This plugin will not be updated to work with FH7...

Thanks Helen and Mike for the info. I had not seen the messages that Helen mentions but as the plugin is disabled currently (in FH) I only make the odd cursory check in the Plugin Store to see if says V7 !.

Helen - I particularly liked the auto add of a Task Fact to an individual, with a standard layout, that I got from the Planner plugin but in its absence I'll start looking at the new functionality to see if it "works" for me. I would certainly be interested in the One-off migration plugin in due course, but your health is far more important than that.

If users are only going to look in the Plugin Store to see if it says V7 then there needs to be a better way of indicating that will never happen.

Agreed Mike - I wouldn't (and haven't) open a Plugin page for a given plugin if I already have it in FH as I don't need to know what it does!

If the following phrase is added to the end of the Plugin page first descriptive sentence then it should appear at the end of the Plugin search summary description.

~ (No V7 update planned).

So for example the Research Planner would say:

Family Historian is an excellent
program for recording the results of
your Family History research, but it
does not come with an inbuilt
mechanism for planning (or tracking)
that research in a structured fashion,
although there are many features you
can take advantage of to do so ~
(No V7 update planned).

Mike, that looks really weird when viewing the plugin entry for plugins that have an introductory paragraph not a single sentence.

And putting it before the first sentence renders the search results meaningless.

So what do you suggest, Helen, in response to Brent's point about not opening the Plugin page?

Did you see my earlier proposal for the Note above the Download button?

Yes, I saw it and don't have a suggestion. Adding a note at the end was the best I could come up with but it didn't work in Brent's case.

So you have no preference for "Note for FH7 users" being underlined or coloured red as I proposed?

I'm not convinced standardisation is needed, Mike.

It's probably best that we encourage users to ask on the forums about any plugins they're particularly interested in that hasn't been migrated, as Brent has done. Dialogue between users and authors can be very productive.

P.S. I've changed my Note... to bold -- it standsout as long as the text above isn't riddled with bold as well.
