Create Source From Template- Problem
Hi All,
Sorry if this has already been mentioned but I couldn't see anything when I looked. I have came across this problem a few times now. I opened the 'Create Source From Template' and entered all the information requested then once I clicked the OK button I get this message. It has happened only when I am putting information in from a Scottish Birth Certificate, I have entered a marriage cert and all went okay and I have been okay with one Birth Certificate but the three others have produced the this problem. I am only trying out FH7 at the moment so I am not going to lose any information, but I also want to make sure I am not doing something wrong. After this happens I lose all the information I have typed in and have to start over. Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
re you talking about the Create Source from Template plugin or a DEA. If so, which DEA, please, and can you post screenshots of the data input?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Helen
What is a DEA?
My problem is, if I use FH7 menu option to input data using menu Add>Source/Citation>Create Source From Template/Prepare Citation... From the window that appears I select Civil Registration Certificate then Create Source fill out the information then select Data Entry Assistant>Record Birth Data (UK) In the window that opens I edit the information and when I click OK that is when I get a pop up asking to update or add birth information with the exact same information that is already there (same birth date, birth location). if you click skip it goes to the pop up in my original post, no matter what options I pick it always goes round these options and the only way out of it is to click Exit which then closes FH7 down completely. Not sure if it happened like this before or just closed the Assistant windows losing all information.
I can add screenshots if you need them but it will take quite a few shots to show the whole thing

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
I've moved this to the plugins forum, as it's a problem with a DEA (Date Entry Assistant) plugin.
Yes, I will need screenshots -- not of the source, of the later popup windows, but of the data entry screen for the plugin once it has been completed.
P.S. When the error message comes up, click Continue and not Exit if you want to keep FH open.

Will add them later, 'she who shall be obeyed' wants to pop out for some shopping
The problem with clicking ok instead of Exit is that you just go into a loop of OK, what about the birthday update to lua error, then back round again. The only option you have eventually is to press exit to get back to doing anything

So you're trying to create a new family without any parents?

Helen
I have tried it many ways but thought I would just start a new project to show what has happened. But in this instance I am trying to create a new family with no parents. The last two screen shots show what happens once I finish inputting data and click okay. That is where you end up not being able to do anything but click exit and that shuts down FH7 completely not just the Create Source From Template window.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
My mistake -- Scottish Birth certificates post 1856 don't include any marriage info.
Will fix and release a new version.

Scottish Birth Certificates post 1856 do have marriage info. My birth certificate gives my mum and dad's marriage date and place and I am born post 1856 (although some days a feel I am born pre 1856) and all certificates I have copies of are the same.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
The examples I've been provided with don't include marriage information... obviously they weren't broad emough.
Perhaps the best thing for me to do is to continue to put my effort into the plugins at Some new Data Entry Assistant plugins for testing (V7) (18293) which don't require me to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of every e.g. birth source in the world
but will require you to create your own template for e.g. a Scottish birth certificate.

What is the reason for FH7 closing when I click Exit?

Exit means exit fh.
Continue if repeated often enough will close the plugin gracefully

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
Thanks for that. I just thought that exit would close the error report and the DEA that was causing the error, not the whole program. I presume if I "close the plugin gracefully" I will lose the information I have already input, so clicking Exit and reopening FH will end up being quicker.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
Helen - strictly from memory, the contents of Scots certificates wander about quite a bit over the years - from a (presumably) impractical level of detail at first, to a bit barer, to gradually reinstating some stuff. And I'm not sure where I'd go to get a full account, since I'd not necessarily trust even ScotlandsPeople to record every field change. A degree of optionality - if possible - would make sense.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
Thanks Adrian. That's my thinking about the very generic plugins I'm working on. Offer the option to specify everything but the kitchen sink plus the option for users to create their own auto text templates.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
Adrian.
I have originals from 1872, 1940 & 1965 (Great Gran, Dad and mine) all ask for same information and same layout. Both my daughters 1993/95 changed to A4 portrait and the only different information was mothers address instead of fathers and then my granddaughter 2016 same layout as daughters but also adding mothers occupation. All of the information I have got from Scotlandspeople from the last 150 years or so give the same information as mine in pretty much the same layout. I am not saying it isn't different in some parts of Scotland but in my findings the information is the same in all of the one's I have with a few tweeks in the last 30 years to take into account that there are many more children born out of marriage, hence mothers address and occupation as more times both parents are working.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
IMO the Copy, Continue & Exit buttons need improving in some way, but in particular, Exit should make it clear that it is FH that is being exited and not just the DEA. I cannot recall what the tooltip popup says, but the buttons would better if labelled Close FH and Continue DEA.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
Helen, my apologies. When I sent you some samples of Scottish birth certs some time ago I only sent samples of the 1855 style and the 1856-1860 style. I had intended to send one for the period 1861-1965 but evidently forgot. Certs from that period include name and 'rank or profession' of father, maiden surname of mother and date and place of marriage. I don't have any sample from 1966 onwards so don't know exactly how they differ.

Re: Create Source From Template- Problem
I suspect FH has no control over the buttons -- it will be determined the Lua interpreter they use. (I sincerely hope they didn't write their own).tatewise wrote: ↑03 Jan 2021 18:40IMO the Copy, Continue & Exit buttons need improving in some way, but in particular, Exit should make it clear that it is FH that is being exited and not just the DEA. Sorry to ask but is there a work around for this. I tried to "close the plugin gracefully" but it has never worked. I even tried to see how long it would take and got to over a hundred times and it is still open. It kind of stops me starting the redo of my tree, as it trips up at the first hurdle and every hurdle there after. Just looked and it has created 115 records for my mother and 6 records for my father, and has created a birth citation for each time I clicked okay for me (115). All 115 records it created for my mother had my birth and her residence in her facts but no marriage, the records it created for my 6 fathers had my mother as a spouse but no marriage date added or any other facts. So as it stands my tree is me with 115 mothers and 6 fathers to date, my tree will be huge if I keep this up and there will only be 3 actual people on it
I will try to add a marriage cert and see where I end up with that

William, no there isn't a workaround -- I'm working too fix it but am still having health problems. I suggest you revert to creating Facts manually with Automatic Source Citation on for now.
I assume you kNow about Edit > Undo Plugin Updates, which will undo anything the plugin does AS LONG AS YOU DO IT BEFORE CLOSING FH.
