I would like to have the Research Planner appear as a tab in the property box. Is it possible?

Unfortunately not (I agree, it would be wonderful).

But you can add it as a menu item in the Tools menu tab.

Then if it is the only one starting with R you can use the keyboard shortcut Alt + T + R.

I shall name all my plugins beginning with Z in future...

Seriously, Mike, ALT-T-R doesn't work -- it invokes Re-order out of sequence data
