Helen

In Firefox in the VM either download fine as they do in Firefox on the Mac side.

The entry in how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine#plugin_library_modules|> Plugin Library Modules is part of the advice in how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine|> Family Historian V6 & Ancestral Sources V5 on Crossover, PlayOnLinux/Mac & Wine, but as Colin says, his problem is in a how_to:family_historian_ancestral_sources_on_oracle_virtualbox#virtualbox_installation|> VirtualBox Installation so maybe that needs some download advice too?

Thanks, Colin -- the next release will include that fix.

Mike, I suspect I'm a special case, but maybe the advice should be for plugin writers as well as users?

Have attached latest version to the original post with fixes for two of the problems reported so far and a workaround for the third.

A minor annoyance with using the Help buttons is that a new Help window is opened each time.
So several Help windows can remain open and never automatically closed, not even when the Plugin is closed.
Most systems either inhibit the Help button after use, or it brings an existing Help window into focus.
However, it may not be easy with this mode of displaying Help to do anything about it.

I can test if the Help file is open by seeing if it can be renamed, but I need to work out how to either move to a new location within the file or close and reopen it. Watch this space -- I have asked on Stackoverflow and hope not to get shot down in flames.

Re Help files, the only way to reuse the Help window AND move it to a new location is to use a third-party tool, which works perfectly, but isn't something I can impose on anyone else

My options to provide structured help (with search and keywords) that is available off-line seem to be:
  1. Abandon providing context-sensitive help -- open the help file at the overview every time Help is requested and don't open a new Help window if the help file is already open. It would be up to the user to navigate around the Help file
  2. Download the Help file in HTML format (which will occupy 1.75Mb as opposed to 1.01Mb for the compressed help file) and use a browser window to display it.
Does anyone have any preferences? Option 2 may be more usable, but at the expense of disk space which may be a concern for some.

@Helen

Sorry to be a PITA but I don't prefer either, both would be acceptable to me. I should have some time this afternoon to try the plugin on Crossover. I will let you know what I find.

Unfortunately I have the missing pl issue yet again with this. The pl folder was not present so I created it and copied the files across and still have the issue so some more research necessary. I will update later.

So how_to:family_historian_v6_on_crossover_wine#plugin_library_modules|> Plugin Library Modules is no longer correct?

I have 2 Family Historian bottles in Crossover (I can't remember why). I had the pl directory installed in the wrong bottle. It is now installed in the correct bottle.

Now for the good news it works perfectly with pl folder in the correct place AND the help file was downloaded and works fine. :D

Sorry for the heart attack @Helen

A new version is included an the original post to address problems associated with Help management. Colin, in particular, can you test that this still works in your environment. Thanks.

Unfortunately that did not work because the downloaded Research Planner 2 Help 2.0.zip file is not the correct format and nothing is extracted either by the Plugin extractZip() function nor by using Windows File Explorer > Extract All.

Can you try downloading and running again Mike -- I've corrected the plugin file name.

What do you want me to test and in which environment? Yesterday I tested the version that was on the first post at that time on Crossover. Other than the pl issue the plugin installed fine and this included the help file.

Colin,

The version in the first post has been updated to use a different Help mechanism. It is that new Help mechanism that needs testing in your environment.

At first glance that looks like it works, but I will take a closer look in due course.
BTW: Which browser engine is it using? Is it Internet Explorer as used within FH Internet windows?

It's an iup webbrowser control, so IE (any external links called as using IE as well, rather than the default browser, but that's not configurable).

I thought so ~ just checking.
It seems to correctly change topic in the one browser Help window, and closes it when Plugin closes.

thanks Mike. Although it uses more disk space, I think it's a better solution.

Sorry Helen - keen user but have spent the last week preparing for, and have now started, a drive from Greece back to the UK so it will be a week or more before I can do any testing!. I'll pass back any findings / comments in due course

Brent -- no worries -- I'm going to leave it here for three weeks before publishing it, so no need to test it on the go!

Just tried the latest version in the VM (rather than Crossover) and I still get the 'failed to download the up-to-date Help file' :(

If I get chance I will try the Crossover install tomorrow.
