Check for Unlinked Media Plugin

Post by davidm_uk » 12 May 2017 10:27

I don't remember seeing this before, but it's been a while since I used this plugin.

It now detects and lists the desktop.ini files in some of my media folders (I have the media organised into sub folders under the project's main media folder). This happens whether I have "Hide Protected Operating System Files" ticked or unticked. I'm not sure what the effect of running the plugin to delete files will have.

See What is the Windows Desktop.ini file and can I delete it?

Presumably, you (or a program) have customised the display mode of those Media folders in some way, but since they should rarely be visited, deleting those desktop.ini files will simply revert to the default display mode and do no harm to the Media files themselves.

Yes Mike, you're correct. Normally my files are configured to display details, whereas I'd set the media folder (and sub folders) to display large thumbnails.

I've always done this, but just never noticed the desktop.ini file being picked up by the Check for Unlinked Media Plugin.

Maybe the plugin could be changed so that it ignores these files? It shouldn't really be changing system files in my view.

Sounds like a reasonable request, but you will have to persuade Jane who is the Author.

However, I am surprised there is a desktop.ini in every sub-folder.
You can customise folders to use the same thumbnail size throughout, without a desktop.ini in every sub-folder.
e.g.
Right-click the Media folder, choose Properties and then Customise tab.
At the top Optimise this folder for: Pictures and tick Also apply this template to all subfolders then click OK.
In the File Explorer View tab choose the desired Large icons size.
Then on the right, click Options and Change folder and search options.
In the Folder Options dialogue on the View tab click Apply to Folders.

Now, all folders using the Pictures template will use Large icons.

The above process will put one desktop.ini file in the Media folder only, but applies to all sub-folders.

If instead you used the Burslem.fh_data folder then only that folder would hold the desktop.ini file, so none of the Media folders would have that file.

Ah yes, I see. I'd always used the Windows Explorer...View...Options...Change folder and search options...View tab for changing either the current folder or all folders.

Your suggestion allows more flexibility for changing views within folders.

Thanks :)
