Look Up Missing Census Facts - Existing entries?

Post by E Wilcock » 26 Apr 2017 09:27

Mike, I now for the first time have a UK tree in fh. So have run your plug in and am finding that it leads to entries which I already have.

How does the plug in recognise existing entries?

Is it done by an exact date? Most of my early research was done pre internet and then transferred to TMG UK version which had dated census fields It could be that the day and month for the dates have been inserted helpfully by fh on import? I doubt if I entered them!

Or is it that the census entries have imported to fh as family events? I am still confused about family events (and the overlap with the TMG witness system and roles in census entry)

So is the plug in ignoring census entries where the family has included the wife and children as witnesses? I didnt knowingly use witnesses very often - But I could run the other plug in to give people (witnesses) their own census events.

Would that be a good idea?

I assume where it offers to change a principal, is that because at the moment the Principal householder also has the census only as a family event?

Or is it done by looking at sources? My old census data came from reading and making notes from films. Thus I used a separate source for each entry.
1841 Census for John and Richard Wilcock Wakefield ED: 9 Folio: 20 Page: 33 Line: 13 GSU Number: 464242 and the Note or Memo lists the people in the household. But once census data went on line, I clumped my census sources by year and added the page reference only in a citation.

I have not had this work of searching done for me by software before - and I started with direct ancestors for whom I already have most census data (so I know what to expect) before switching to cousins on the outskirts of the tree.

The plugin looks for the existence of an individual census fact for each census year, and only lists those without such facts. Family census facts are not used.

How does the plug in recognise existing entries?
The Plugin recognises Individual Census Events and also Family Census Events for both partners, but NOT their children or parents. The Date on the Census Event must match the actual Census Date. The Day or Month can be missing, but if they exist they must match. So for the UK 6 June 1841 Census the Date on the Census Event must be 6 June 1841, or June 1841, or 1841. If it were say the 7 June 1841 or July 1841 then that would not match.
BTW: John is mistaken and since V4.0 it does recognise Family Census Events, see plugins:help:lookup_missing_census:version_history|> Lookup Missing Census Facts ~ Version History.
It could be that the day and month for the dates have been inserted helpfully by fh on import?
No that is not possible. FH will never invent data on import.
So is the plug in ignoring census entries where the family has included the wife and children as witnesses?
Yes, Fact Witnesses on Census Events are ignored by the Plugin.

Running Give Witnesses Their Own Facts would help but only works for Witnesses on Individual Census Events and NOT Family Census Events (although that might be a useful enhancement). In the meantime, the Migrate Census Family to Individual Events Plugin splits each Census (family) Event into two Individual Census Events and then Give Witnesses Their Own Facts should work, but will probably produce duplicate Census Events for each Witness.

[ EDIT: Both Give Witnesses Their Own Facts and Migrate Census Family to Individual Events are now in the Plugin Store and the former does handle Census (family) Events so together they can split Census (family) Events with Census Witnesses into multiple Individual Census Events.]
I assume where it offers to change a principal, is that because at the moment the Principal householder also has the census only as a family event?
Do you mean where it lists PRINCIPAL under Role in the Result Set of changes? If so, then that change is only the removal of the Witnesses and the Census Event itself is not changed.
Or is it done by looking at sources?
No, Source Citations are ignored by this Plugin, and it only looks at Census Events and their Dates.
