Export Gedcom File (TNG)

Post by rfield » 08 Feb 2016 17:42

Hi Mike,

I was looking at the images after doing an export/import into TNG and was noticing that the individuals images when using "All~LMO" have the same notes as the full images. Is there a way to have the individuals images act like they do for reports? Maybe have the Individuals name unless specified in the frame notes. And then the usual "Media Date:", "Keywords:". Just a thought.
Thanks,

Ron

I can see what you mean Ron.
To be honest the Picture Note rarely gets used in FH because it does not appear in most reports.

I'll see if a substitute Picture Note could be used perhaps based on the Record name, bearing in mind that Media can be attached to Records (Individual, Family, Source), Facts, Citations, etc. Whether it can be conditional on the frame Link/Note is doubtful.

Alternatively, if there is a Link/Note then for a Part Frame image that could suppress the Picture Note when in ALL~LMO mode. That way it would be under the users control.

Let me have a think.

After some experiments, my current thinking is as follows, and applies to all of the Media export modes.

1) Full Frame Media Images, would list in their Notes, all of the Part Frame Link/Notes based on that image, plus the Picture Note, Media Date & Keywords if they exist. This is much the same as currently, but I have spotted some minor improvements, because the Link/Notes were not all listed before Picture Note.

2) Part Frame Media Images, would list in their Notes, their own Part Frame Link/Note or the Picture Note but not both, plus Media Date & Keywords if they exist. This is new because the Link/Note suppresses the Picture Note.

1) Sounds good.

For 2) would that mean you would have to find all the Part Frame Images and add a part frame link/note in order to prevent the main image notes from being displayed?

Just a thought, what if the title was equal to the linked individual's name and notes are blank unless the link/note contains notes? I just realized that if I create a part frame of an individual from a non group photo I might want the main photo note. Hmm...still thinking about it.

I also noticed that some notes like the following example produce a lot of "Picture Note:" references. Almost like every CRLF creates another "Picture Note:". Have you come across this?

"For 2) would that mean you would have to find all the Part Frame Images..." Yes, but that is easy. Just open the Media record (there is only one) and on the All tab the Link/Notes are all there.

"what if the title was equal to the linked individual's name" I don't understand what point you are making? Bear in mind what I said earlier about Media being able to be attached to Individuals, Families, Facts, Citations, Sources, Places, etc, and any proposal must work in all those cases.

"if I create a part frame of an individual from a non group photo..." then with the ALL~LMO option you will get two images: one full image as per 1), and one part frame image as per 2) which will have the Picture Note if there is no Link/Note.

There is a Picture Note: label on each Note paragraph delimited by newline. If only the 1st paragraph were labelled with Picture Note: then it would not be obvious what the unlabelled paragraphs were.

The only scenario I can think of where the Picture Note text would not appear somewhere in the exported (TNG) data is:
  • PART~LMO/ABS conversion mode
  • No Full Frame image is employed, i.e. only Part Frame images linked
  • A Picture Note exists, but every Part Frame image has a Link/Note
  • So the Link/Notes suppress the Picture Note in format 2), and there is no Full Frame format 1) to attach it to.
In FULL~LMO/ABS conversion mode every image will use Full Frame format 1) and include everything.

In ALL~LMO/ABS conversion mode there must always be at least one Full Frame format 1), and one Part Frame format 2).

Sorry I didn't explain it very well. I was making reference to the first example, the partial image of Barbara has the name (link) displayed as "Alexander Buick Allan Family" . Would the partial images retain the main or full image title/link?
Which gedcom attribute TITL and/or NOTE would get populated with the partial image link/note?

Alexander Buick Allan Family is the TITL of the Media in TNG for each full/part image derived from the one Media record in FH, and is the only viable way of identifying that relationship.

The entire discussion has been about the NOTE contents only, which is where it all began in your original posting about the labelled Picture Note text in the Media NOTE, and as stated in my formats 1) and 2).

TITL and Picture Note and Link/Note are three different items. The complication is that FH uses _NOTE for the Picture Note, and multiple instances of NOTE for each Link/Note, plus _DATE for the Date and _KEYS for Keywords, whereas most products such as TNG only have one TITL and NOTE field that the Plugin must fill with all the FH items.

I guess I had a mix of the two, title and note in my original post.
"Is there a way to have the individuals images act like they do for reports?" I was referring to how FH uses the link name as the caption in reports and not the Main image Title for Partial Images. I thought there might be such a variable available when creating the partial image that could be used for the TITL.

So if I understand your description of the suggested Note items then it would be as follows.

1) Full Images would remain pretty much the same with the main Picture Note, Picture Title, Keywords, Date.
2) Partial Images would also receive the Picture Note, Picture Title, Keywords and Date unless there were notes in the Link/Note which would override the Picture Note.

Am I close? :)

Yes, the Alexander Buick Allan Family at top is the Title and the rest is the Note derived from all the FH fields as I described earlier.

The FH Report defaults use neither Title nor Link/Note in picture captions.
The default caption is composed form the host Record Name, Media Date, and calculated Age.
You must tick Report > Options > Pictures > Inc. Picture Title and untick If Showing Whole Picture Only to get the Title in Part Frame picture captions.
To get the Link/Note text as picture caption you must use the Media tab, Edit, and tick Use Note as Caption.

The Plugin cannot easily see the Report Options, but it can see the Use Note as Caption option. It only makes sense to tick that option if there is Link/Note text, and it is that text that in my proposal suppresses the Picture Note. So it does not make much difference which the Plugin uses to suppress the Picture Note.

Your interpretaion of 1) and 2) is pretty close.
Just be aware that the Picture Title is at the top separate from the other items in the Note.
Format 1) also lists all the Link/Notes from all the Part Frame images in format 2).

I am still working on the Plugin changes needed to manage the Picture Note text and the Link/Note text (that I propose to label as Caption Note).

The six Media conversion modes, with various combinations of Picture Note and Caption Note, are proving to be more difficult to resolve than expected. I am trying to generate Media with Note text that is easy to explain, is consistent for all conversion modes, rarely omits any original text, avoids replicated text, and satisfies user expectations.

I think I have got a working prototype.
Try ATTACHMENTS Export Gedcom File Plugin Version 2.4.2 Date 18 Feb 2016.

I need to update its Help & Advice pages for the Media options, but in summary each Media image Note now contains the following labelled text:
  • For many options each Media image has any specific Caption Link/Note linked to it in FH AND any Picture Note.
  • One exception is FULL~ABS that has EVERY Caption Link/Note linked to it in FH AND any Picture Note.
  • Another exception is ALL~LMO & ALL~ABS that for each cropped image has any specific Caption Link/Note linked to it in FH OR any Picture Note, while the full image has just any Picture Note.
They all have any Media Date or Keywords labelled in the Note.

The last exception is the one you wanted for TNG, but is applicable to all products.

[EDIT: ATTACHMENT deleted as now in Plugin Store at Version 2.5 Date 25 Feb 2016.]

Hello, A general comment from a new member.

Just downloaded FH V6 trial today. I have a TNG website also, and to date, have been exporting from my 'homebase' of Legacy Family Tree. I usually export my entire database with each data update, and make sure all media are in place on my host server.

I imported from a Legacy created gedcom successfully, with main issue being media files linked to multiple individuals. I've posted separately on those observations.

I then successfully exported to my TNG website (simulated on my laptop with Wamp sever), and overall, looked very good, except for the media link issues.

Glad to see you've been posting re:TNG and will look over what you've done, and have been looking over the available plugins, which I cannot try out unless I first purchase the product

One item sorely missed in FH is a searchable list or index ~ LegacyFT giving an option to list married as well as surnames for women.

Welcome to the FHUG Ron.
On the Records Window there are search filters but not for married names.
There is a Plugin to list/search all persons names including married names.
Check the Knowledge Base > FH Plugins > Help and Advice > Export Gedcom File > Output Formats for TNG that gives full details of import to TNG.

Also in Knowledge Base checkout Key Features for Newcomers.

Thanks for the response and advice. Actually, Calico Pie recently responded to my query and indicated the 'records list' in V6 has an option to search by married names, and it does work! I am going to purchase FH and excited to check out the plugins as well. Legacy Family Tree didn't provide this flexibility, though it is a good product, it has lost a step or two in speed with the advent of media file handling.

Perhaps you can tell me, is the single user license for one computer only? I like to have it installed (as backup) on a 2nd laptop as well. Don't wish to purchase license for two since never would be running copies two at the same time.

Ron

Yes, licence allows two PC. In Knowledge Base search for Licence Agreement.
There is also advice about synchronising the two PC databases via cloud storage.

In using the FH default export, Ansi, with all 'notes' checked, found that after TNG import there were many missing notes. So I tried your plugin, with the settings as pictured. I only export the media links, since I copy the files to the server, created thumbnails, etc., myself.

TNG looks identical to what I was getting from Legacy 5.5 export with just one minor additon; after each media item I get 'keywords:picture' inserted. Any idea where that came from?

Other than that small detail, results are looking excellent and identical. :)

I recommend you use the TNG export option rather than Std, then you will get better TNG compatibility.

There are many FH fields that have no Std Gedcom nor TNG equivalents, so the tactic often used by the Plugin is to put those values in a labelled Note. The Keywords: Picture entry comes from the Media record Keywords field.
The SOURCE: and RESEARCH: entries do not come from Plugin, so presumably you have merged Media details?
I think there is a Plugin Options setting to remove Keywords entirely if you wish.

The full details of such transformations are in the Plugin > Help and Advice > Output Formats sections for each target product. Please checkout all the other Help and Advice sections, as I suggested in my earlier reply to you.

Hi Mike,

It works great. Looks a lot better than it used to.

I've been spending some time adding Link/Notes.
I also did an export to Rootsmagic 7 which had the same results. I'll give FTM 2014 a test too although I don't expect the results to be any different.

One cosmetic thing I noticed. No big deal but there's an extra space in the formating for cropped images. This was there before these changes but I just didn't notice it until now. You can see it in the very first image in this thread. If the cropped image has Link/Note text the space is gone in the new plugin. Gedcom wise it appears as an empty NOTE followed by CONT. Again only a cosmetic thing.

Thank you for the hard work Mike!

Hi Ron,

If you haven't seen it yet the following link is very helpful for setting up to exporting to TNG
http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... generation

The Keywords can be used to specify the collection the images should belong to when imported into TNG (photos, headstone, document etc.).

Mike,

Thanks for pointing out the TNG export option in your plugin. If you can believe it, totally missed it the first go-around. Thanks too for pointing out the keyword removal.

Except for a few differences in where some notes appear in TNG now compared to my Legacy exports, results are really very close, with no missing data whatever.

The plugin's add a lot of power and flexibility to FH, and I you've contributed a lot through the years, I see. I can appreciate the effort, I'm retired from an IT career myself, having been an assembly programmer back in the late 70-80's. TNG and it's PHP code is OK for me to do minor modifications, but I leave it at that.

I will do more reading until asking more questions, since it seems like you answer a good deal of them. Now I have to settle into looking at comparing Legacy vs. FH for data input routine.

Hi Mike,

I did find an issue with the FTM 2014 export.
I haven't had time to dig into it anymore yet but on my initial import "descriptions" were missing from all images, full and cropped. Titles were there though.
I'll take a look at the gedcom when I get home tonight.

I don't use FTM 2014 much so I read the help file and it mentions that only the title and Link/note are supported.
I guess that would explain not having any descriptions in FTM. :)
