Check and repair plugin

Post by ilr133 » 12 Nov 2014 11:58

I'm new to using forums so apologies if this is wrong, but I have a problem that doesnt appear to be answered. Having moved computers I have downloaded the check and repair media plugin (I'm on the latest FHv5) It detects many errors and asks if I want them fixed. Why do I need a destination folder? Is it the media folder for my project? Having selected a folder (I made a new one to see what happened) I then get an error message "family historian\plugins\check and repair media links fh_188 attempt tp concatenate local file (a nil value). No changes made to data"
What does this mean and what do I do about it?

Welcome to the FHUG Forums.

Firstly a little housekeeping:
To save you telling us each time, could you please set your FH Version so it appears in the right-hand panel.
At the very top of this FHUG page click User Control Panel, then on the Profile tab select Family Historian Version at the bottom and click Submit.

Now to your problem:
If you have a well structure FH V5 Project then when you move from PC to PC there should be no need to repair any Multimedia links.
There is general advice in how_to:index#installation_guide|> Family Historian > Installation Guide.
But specifically the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 Migration Guide should let you migrate everything from PC to PC without upsetting any links and retaining all your customisations.

I assume the old PC is no longer usable, but if it is still working, then adjusting the V5 Project & Media setup on it first, would be the easier route.

The Plugin is primarily intended to fix relatively minor Media mishaps, rather than wholesale broken links.
The main thing is that the "destination folder" is a misnomer, and actually means the folder where the Media files are currently located, and using that knowledge might fix things.

With a little background it may be easier to mend the Media links by hand.
On the old PC did you have a V5 Project that opened in the File > Project Window?
On the new PC does this V5 Project sill open in the File > Project Window?
Where is Tools > Work with External Files Links expecting to find the Media files?
What Windows folder actually holds the Media files on the new PC?
Which version of Windows was on the old PC and which version is on the new PC?
