d'Aboville numbering

Post by bacoms » 12 Aug 2014 17:54

This is my first post so hi everyone.

Have just bought and installed Family Historian V5 and successfully loaded my family GEDCOM file.
As I'm used to the d'Aboville numbering system, I looked for a way of using this.

I followed as best I could tatewise's instructions on installing his plugin to implement this but got stuck trying to understand the following:
The Plugin requires you to choose the root Individual and creates the dAboville Numbers in the Custom Id fields (data reference %INDI.REFN%) and finally displays them in a Result Set.
Could someone expand on what this entails please?

Welcome to the FHUG.

I have moved this posting to the Plugin Discussion Forum where it fits better.

This discussion follows on from thread Scottish names & d'Aboville Numbers (10974).

If you have followed the instructions successfully then you can use Tools > dAboville Numbers to run the Plugin.
The process described is similar for any Plugin.
See plugins:about|> About Family Historian Plugins for details.

As I am sure you know d'Aboville Numbers are calculated with respect a chosen root person given the number 1.

So when you run the Plugin it asks you to choose this root Individual using the standard Select Records dialogue.
It then calculates the d'Aboville Numbers starting from this person.

The Plugin saves each number in the general purpose Custom Id field of each Individual for future reference.

It then displays each Individual against each number in a tabulated display called a Result Set, which you will come across a lot.

BTW: As a newcomer, please check you have installed the latest FH version.
Use Help > Check for Updates and ensure you have V5.0.9.

Just to add you don't need to use the plugin if you only want the numbering on the Descendant outline report as it can already show them.

I've not used this plugin before but after a quick perusal, on running it seems to give a new window to "select records", choose one from the LH pane, click > to move to the RH pane , then OK, that gives a list of names in d'aboville order, quite neat, might use it myself now I know it's there. You could copy/paste into a spreadsheet etc. The other alternative is to just use the Focus window and the descendants tab, but no numbering there, just indentations.

Am beginning to get the hang of it, thanks.

One thing on the reports generated: they don't show more than 3 generations. Is this a default value that can be changed? If so, how.

No, there is no default and no limit to the number of generations.

If the Plugin only shows 3 generations, then your chosen root person only has 3 generations of descendants in your FH database.

[EDIT]
Sorry, misunderstood that your question referred back to the Reports that Jane mentioned.
(I thought you meant the Plugin Result Set)

In FH almost everything has Options & Preferences.
For Reports use Report Options and the number of Generations can be increased up to 100.

Checkout how_to:family_historian_documentation|> Family Historian Documentation,
and also how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

yep, on the descendant narrative for example, choose Report Options and the main tab lets you choose the # of generations.

I think you need to have a mix of playing with the options and reading the Help and "getting the most out of familiy historian".

One good thing with the options, there is usually a button "installation settings" which lets you revert to the "installation settings", so whatever you have messed up by playing with the options you can start again.

I found it useful to "play" with a dummy dataset, or even the Sample Project (which can be reset).
